"I was so overwhelmed, I forgot to ask her name."
Growing up in India (in the 90’s), I had a struggling yet ambitious entrepreneur for a father and a humble loving home-maker for a mother along with two younger siblings. We were a simple traditional south Indian family with not many materialistic possessions but we were definitely a family with vigour to make it - to do something, leave behind a legacy and stand-out-from-the-crowd (as my father still calls it). So it was no surprise that I was the best in pretty much everything I did. Always the top of my class, captain of the debate team, several sports trophies lined my shelf and was the youngest astronomer from India chosen to attend a special camp in Europe (fascinated by astronomy, I am nerdy that way!) There was this innate drive in me, is still the case today, to fulfil my dharma (my purpose/duty/service). So as a young smart ambitious South Indian girl with not many mentors or a privileged ecosystem to propel my life, I looked for others like me. Someone who had made it so I could chart my trajectory. All I found was (auto) biographies of tall men, mostly white standing in power poses on its cover. I read a few and wasn’t sure anymore if I will ever do something that matters in life.

Fast forward to 2016, as part of the 1-1-1 initiative pink maharani supports, we visited a school to share our vision. Our initiative empowers and adopts one girl child in India for one year and sponsors her menstrual hygiene awareness and care, with the sale of every pink maharani product. Periods are still a taboo topic in many countries like India urgently needing empowerment, information and tools to beat the negative stigma. I was accompanied by a few of my Europeans friends who were keen to visit our projects. We were talking to a group of high school girls from a near-by village. One of the girls raised her hand and commented, “I have seen many firangs (foreigners/”white” people) come to my school as volunteers, speakers and teachers, told me to dream, stand-up for my rights, disobey for my freedom and education but I never took them seriously. But this is the first time I see someone like you, who looks like me come with the firangs and speak about the exact same things with the difference of having actually gone through it all.” She added that, if I, lower-middle class child with then financially challenged (and traditional) background, could beat the odds and do it, then one day she could and would too. This was one of those moments in my life, where I was glad to be alive to listen to this as a women, entrepreneur and philanthropist.

I will never forget this day nor the girls face. I was so overwhelmed that I forgot to ask her name. I can’t tell you where this girl is nor what she is doing today, I wish I knew. Maybe my story propelled her forward to explore something greater for herself or maybe not to give up on her education where most girls are married off at 16. Until this day in 2016, I wasn’t too keen on running pink maharani. With a degree in bio-technology and a masters in business, I wasn’t sure what I was doing running a sustainable fashion brand. Only that day, did I truly understand the lines of my dharma aligning.

I believe, I haven’t done anything extraordinary with my life (yet) but for this girl in 2016, it was something. So I believe no matter where you are from, what your upbringing was, what you do now, what you have (or not) achieved, whatever your story - share it. I encourage you to share your most triumphant moment and also the heart-breaking ones with whoever willing to listen because you never know who you end up impacting. If you ever feel like sharing, I am all ears for your story :)
