Making climate part of the Official Community Plan
Transition Sooke continues to try to make the climate emergency an overarching theme of the new Official Community Plan. As part of the community engagement process, we have met with the planning consultants (DIalog), submitted briefs, written letters to council and the community, addressed council directly, and provided feedback in as many ways as we can.

Public applications to Council committees (closes December 9, 2020)
The District of Sooke is accepting applications from members of the public interested in serving on Council committees. If you dream of finding a way to help give District of Sooke a friendly nudge toward more climate friendly practices, this may be an ideal opportunity. Consider applying for one of the many vacancies below.
Climate Action Committee (9 vacancies) provides advice to Council and recommends policies to assist the District and community in achieving a reduction in all carbon emissions by 40 – 50% by 2030
Select Committee on Community Economic Development (8 vacancies) provides recommendations to Council that build a fairer and stronger local economy tackling poverty and homelessness
Land Use and Development Committee (8 vacancies) provides recommendations to Council regarding land-use policies and development procedures
Program for the Arts Committee (1 vacancy) provides advice to Council on a wide range of community art initiatives and events

Sooke Multi-Belief Initiative in action 2019 to 2020
Over the past year, the Sooke Multi-Belief Initiative (SMBI), a working group of Transition Sooke, developed a Compassionate Action Plan for the Sooke Community. Once the Plan was approved by the District Council, SMBI was able to have our District declared a Compassionate Community by the Charter for Compassion International.
SMBI just completed the Sooke Compassionate Action Plan – Year One Report outlining the progress on the Plan and further actions required. The report is being submitted to Council for approval and attachment to the Official Community Plan.
SMBI is continuing to pursue its purpose of creating a prosperous, flourishing community, a haven of unity and compassion, living in harmony with our physical environment.
