Lonoikamakahiki!

On this day of giving, the HACBED board is excited to share HACBED’s work with one of our community partners, Kaʻala Farm.

Aloha mai,

HACBED has been privileged to provide ongoing support to Kaʻala Farm and its people in carrying out its crucial and wonderful mission.

Kaʻala Farm is…

  • An ancient agricultural complex, restored and producing kalo as our ancestors did for centuries.
  • A Cultural Learning Center where learning comes alive for thousands of school children in our hands-on science program every year.
  • A cultural kīpuka (an area of land surrounded by lava flows) where Hawaiian traditions are practiced daily to make people and communities stronger.

Uncle Eric Enos has been leading Kaʻala Farm as a Cultural Learning Center in Waiʻanae for the past twenty years as its Executive Director. Kūpuna and founders included Aunty Stella Pihana, Uncle Walter Paulo, Uncle Pops Raposa, Aunty Puanani Burgess, and so many others, who have lifted up Kaʻala Farm over the last five decades. HACBED’s pilina (relationship) with Ka‘ala Farm stems from Uncle Eric and Aunty Pua being part of the core group of practitioners who founded HACBED.

HACBED has recently supported the Kaʻala Farm leadership by helping to capture their vision for the present and the future.  For example, on the food production side, the staff have discussed exciting new ideas, including a kulolo mix and packets of pre-cooked kalo. Such innovations will require a traditional foundation of culturally grounded practices and indigenous approaches to food to be passed on.  It is HACBED’s honor to support Kaʻala Farm so it can continue the legacy of its Founders by serving the families and places of Waiʻanae for generations to come.

Thank you for allowing us to share a little about Ka‘ala Farms and some of the work that HACBED does.  If you are able to contribute during this challenging time, we humbly ask for your support of Ka‘ala Farms and/or HACBED in the upcoming year.  On our end, we welcome gifts of service, time, and resources and are always looking for partners to better protect our home!
