Neighbourhood Watch in
Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby

eNewsletter #476 - 01 December 2020

This weekly eNewsletter is compiled by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers as a service for residents in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby council areas. The eNewsletter is a new type of Neighbourhood Watch; utilising the available technology to keep people more connected and up-to-date with local crime and safety issues.

The eNewsletter includes a selection of posts from our local police at the Ku-ring-gai PAC Facebook page (also known as 'eyewatch'), primarily for those not familiar with Facebook. We add anything interesting from a Neighbourhood Watch point-of-view - this could be a local newspaper article, a roadwork warning, crime prevention tip(s), an upcoming Neighbourhood Watch meeting, Q&As from residents, or an item from another Police command ("Crooks know no boundaries!").

🚓 Have you seen anything we should share with the community?
Please email our NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby volunteers. We do value your contributions and thank you for your support.
🚓 Please feel free to
share/forward this eNewsletter with your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours.

29 November, from Ku-Ring-Gai SES

Our wonderful volunteers remain out and about in the Ku-Ring-Gai area cleaning up after today's wild weather.
We have now received over 50 jobs as a result of wind gusts over 65km/hr and temperatures reaching almost 40 with many trees affected.
We currently have 4 teams in the field working into the night supported by an Incident Management Team at our Wahroonga headquarters.
⚠️ Stay at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines
⚠️ Report fallen power lines to Ausgrid (131 388)
🧸🐕 Keep children and pets indoors
☎️ If you require emergency assistance due to storm or flood, call the NSW SES on 132 500. For emergency assistance in life threatening emergencies call 000 immediately. For the most up to date information visit the Bureau of Meteorology
here.
29 November, from NSW SES Hornsby Unit

Volunteers from NS W SES Hornsby Unit have been attending to more than 30 calls for assistance following strong winds since early this morning causing trees to fall on roads, power lines, homes, and buildings all around the Hornsby Shire. Winds are expected to continue until this evening.
🌬️🏊 Unfortunately this trampoline was picked up and blown into a backyard swimming pool in Berowra today. This is a good reminder to secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. These items can potentially become flying hazards to your home or neighbours' homes.
☎️ If you require emergency assistance during storms and floods, contact the NSW SES on 132 500. If life threatening, call Triple Zero (000).

Man charged after allegedly assaulting three teenage girls - Berowra
Tuesday, 24 November 2020 06:05:34 PM
A man has been charged after allegedly assaulting three teenage girls in two separate incidents in Sydney’s north last month.
On Saturday 3 October 2020, a 16-year-old girl was waiting for a bus on the Pacific Highway, Berowra when she was approached by a man who allegedly pushed her, causing her to fall to the ground and hitting her head.
The second incident occurred on Monday 26 October 2020, when a man travelling on the same train as two girls – aged 15 – disembarked at Berowra Railway Station.
The trio have walked to the exit and the man has allegedly assaulted both girls, punching one to the head and slapping the other in the face.
The teens sustained minor injuries during the assaults.
Officers from the Police Transport and Public Safety Command commenced an investigation and on Tuesday 24 November 2020, arrested a 50-year-old man in bushland at Cowan.
He was taken to Hornsby Police Station and was charged with common assault (x2) and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The man was refused bail and appeared at Hornsby Local Court today (Tuesday 24 November 2020).
25 November, from Quakers Hill Police Area Command

Parent, “Oh, there’s the police. You’d better be good, or they will arrest you, take you away and put you in jail”.
Police officer, "Uhhmmmm really??? No, not going to happen!"
It’s something we hear way too often while out walking through shopping centres.
Please teach your children not to be scared of Police.
Teach them, Police are there to help them, we are Safe Adults in the community along with their mum and dad, grandparents and teachers.

Teach them if they get lost, we help them find their mum or dad. If they need help, look for one of us and we’ll be more than happy to assist.
If our children grow up in an environment where their parents are teaching them to fear police, then who will they feel safe enough to talk to when they need help?
Next time, when you and your children walk past police officers in a shopping centre, give them a wave and say hi. If it’s me you wave to, we promise to wave and say hi back.
Be sure to share this post to help get the word out there!

Hello All, could everyone that has mentioned they are a victim of crime on this thread please ensure your incident is reported. This can be done as easily as calling 131444.
.
Without accurate reporting we can not target crime trends effectively or efficiently.
North Shore Police Area Command which covers East Lindfield and Lindfield review and investigate all crimes with a view of identifying and apprehending offenders. We deploy our Police to all areas of our Command and use reporting data to target hotspots.
.
The best way to stop crime is to prevent it. Most stealing incidents are opportunistic. Don’t leave valuables in cars or in sight. Lock your cars, lock your doors and windows and be mindful not to leave valuable items in sight of thieves.
.
Remember, not all offenders prowl the night. Some will do it in plain sight during daylight hours. If you see something not right call us. Record descriptions, clothing and vehicle rego numbers.

Fire has destroyed a house in Sydney’s north-west overnight.
About 7.30pm yesterday (Thursday 26 November 2020), emergency services were called to a house on Neville Court, Castle Hill, following reports of a fire.
Police arrived to find the house and attached three garages engulfed in flames.
Fire and Rescue NSW worked for four hours to get the fire under control but the building was destroyed; the damage is estimated to be in the vicinity of $2 million.
No one was inside the building and there haven’t been reports of injury.
Officers from The Hills Area Command have established a crime scene and commenced an investigation.
Fire investigators and scene of crime officers were not able to enter the site until this morning; however, initial inquiries suggest the fire was not suspicious.
Anyone with information, or who may have been in the area at the time of the fire, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Gordon/Killara/East Killara had their AGM last night via Zoom (thanks to NHW NSW for providing their help). Notes to follow when available.
One gentleman asked whether the recent October crime stats for Killara could be compared with previous years. Here's the comparison:

Taken from 'Our 20 Favourite Crime Prevention Tips for Seniors'
Tip #1.
INSTALL A SPY-HOLE.
Tip #2. INSTALL A SECURITY DOOR-CHAIN, or SECURITY DOOR BAR, or SECURITY DOOR, AND USE IT. [A door bar may be easier for elderly hands to manipulate.]
Tip #3. INSTALL SECURITY SENSOR LIGHTING. Consider connecting the sensor lighting to a socket unit that can ‘chirrup’ or ‘bark’ as a warning/ deterrent.
Tip #4. DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR TO STRANGERS. NEVER ALLOW STRANGERS
INTO YOUR HOME. IF SOMEONE REQUIRES YOUR ASSISTANCE IN AN
EMERGENCY, PHONE FOR HELP YOURSELF. BE WARY OF STRANGERS.
Tip #5. NEVER ACCEPT DOOR-TO-DOOR OFFERS OF WORK FROM TRADESMEN (eg tree-lopping, gutter maintenance) WITHOUT CONSULTATION WITH A TRUSTED FRIEND OR RELATIVE.
Tip #6. KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOURS AND THE COMMUNITY YOU LIVE IN.
Tip #7. ACCEPT OFFERS OF ASSISTANCE FROM NEIGHBOURS AND TRUSTED
ORGANISATIONS (eg Gardening — help is available from EasyCare Gardening.)
Tip #8. NEVER LET YOUR CREDIT CARD OUT OF YOUR SIGHT IN A CAFÉ OR RESTAURANT—GO WITH IT!
Tip# 9. BUDDY-UP WITH A NEIGHBOUR— USE A SIGNAL TO SHOW YOU HAVE
ARISEN SAFELY (eg a blind raised.)
From Cop Humour Australia
Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Rosebud's newest recruit; Senior Constable Bruce ALMIGHTY.
Bruce is a dogged, hard/wet-nosed investigator with a taste for justice. And roast chicken. And kebabs. And chips. But mostly justice.
He roams the halls of the Rosebud Police Station, barking at evildoers, villains, miscreants, and occasionally doors opening that take him by surprise.
Bruce also enjoys a bit of undercover work from time to time, occasionally posing as ‘Dog who has not been fed’. He is not especially convincing, it must be said.
As time goes on, you can expect Bruce to share this thoughts and wisdom on the world, and maybe even reveal the greatest mystery of all - What exactly is he dreaming about when he runs in his sleep?
Bruce’s piece of advice for this week: If you’re coming down to visit the Peninsula, remember that people (and dogs) live here, so don’t trash the place. Be respectful, anything less would be positively cat-like. And Bruce is NOT about that life.
