Ekiti State To Open Up Education Contract Information

PPDCs Programme Officer, Nonye Akubuo Addressing a Cross-section of Participants At The Workshop On Open Contracting.

Our team was in Ekiti state this month for a three-day workshop with non-state actors, SUBEB representatives, media, and government officials. The workshop emphasized the need for transparency and access to information to improve service delivery in the education sector of the state.

A highlight of the conversation was the revelation that lack of access to information has played a huge role in terms of project implementation.

The permanent secretary of the State Universal Education board acknowledged these findings and commended the efforts of PPDC in advocating for open systems in the education sector. He also committed to opening education contracting information.

PPDC Commemorates Its Open Contracting Journey In Nigeria

R-L: PPDCs CEO, Mrs. Nkem Ilo, DG Bureau of Public Procurement Ekiti State. Mr O'Seun Odewole,  Community and Capacity Building Manager, OCP. Andie Okon Posing With A Copy Of The Report.

Over the years, PPDC has consistently worked on improving open contracting, access to information, and procurement laws in Nigeria. All these efforts have led to the launch of a report on the work done so far.

The report looks at the role of the Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC) in promoting transparency throughout the procurement process through its activism, procurement monitoring, and provision of technical support to state governments.

The launch was an opportunity to present key findings especially on how open contracting has helped shape procurement practices, improved data culture and responsiveness; but also in helping government institutions better manage resources in the delivery of public infrastructure.

FOI Capacity Building For Head Of Service

Staff Of Head Of Service At the FOI Training

Improving easy access to information and transparency in the public sector is important for a more accountable and effective government, which is why the PPDC regularly carries our training exercises on freedom of information and its benefits for public institutions.  One of such training was done for The Office Of The Head Of Civil Service Of The Federation (OHCSF) in November. Our goal was to provide technical support that will help build systems that can adapt open government, open contracting, and ultimately improve citizens’ participation in governance.

PPDC Tracks Covid-19 Palliatives In Kano State

Our Community-Based Monitors (CBMs) in Kano State who are trained on the utility of the FOI Act (2011) and the Public Procurement Act to aid effective monitoring of public projects visited two local governments in the state; Nasarawa and Dala LGAs to monitor the disbursement of Covid-19 palliatives.

They paid a courtesy visit to the local government chairmen and gathered information from them on how the relief materials were distributed. During the visit, both chairmen reported on how much palliatives they received from the government, NGOs, and individuals and how they were disbursed.

They emphasized that the needs of the community members were a priority in the whole process.
