An extremely rare privately published map of New York City's Manhattan above 55th street drawn by Hamilton Ewen and published in 1869 by Hamilton E. Towle. Although a commercial rather than official venture, the map offers impressive size and detail, noting information relating to the enormous project of street grading and leveling then occurring on what is today the Upper West Side. A most unusual manuscript map of Shanghai dating to roughly 1874. Oriented to the south, the map follows the course of the Huangpu River from its confluence with the Yangtze River and the Baoshan Waterway. Although unattributed, the map is most likely the work of Sudo Katsuzō (湏藤 / 湏藤勝三), a Japanese diplomat and cartographer who served on a mission to Taiwan and China following the Mudan Incident of 1871. This is an 1886 Charles Denby map of northern Taiwan or Formosa. Impressive detail appears throughout, with towns and villages identified. Cultivated areas are labeled by the crops they produce: tea, indigo, hemp, and sugar cane. The British Consulate (labeled 'H.B.M.'s Consulate), customs house, Chinese beacon, and other landmarks also appear. The region's topography is illustrated and elevations for several peaks are given. This is a c. 1960 Old Nick Rum pictorial map of Martinique. Created to promote Old Nick rum in France, an idyllic map of Martinique dominates the broadside and evokes Caribbean paradise. Bananas, pineapples, parrots, palm trees, beach umbrellas, and, of course, sugar cane, likely had Parisians dreaming of lounging on a beach, cocktail in hand. Follows the founder of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad.

This is an 1870 Ernst Georg Ravenstein map of the southwestern United States. The map traces William Abraham Bell's travels in the region, including his time with the Kansas Pacific Railroad Survey. A red line illustrates Bell's peregrinations from Kansas west to the Pacific Ocean, his voyage up the Pacific coast to San Francisco, and his overland trek back to Kansas. A thin red line highlights Sir Frederic John Goldsmid's route through the region from Bandar Abbas on the Strait of Hormuz north to Mash-had. Goldsmid was dispatched to this region in order to enforce a British-negotiated Selstan frontier boundary settlement, a move in the 'Great Game' intended to secure Persia and Afghanistan as buffer provinces between Russia and British India. The map dates from the first part of the 19th century, predating both the discovery of Terra Firma in Antarctica, and the conventional use of the name 'Australia' in preference to 'New Holland.' Shanghai's tram network, one of the first in Asia, offered comprehensive public transport through the Foreign Concessions. The Japanese attacked the American Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor on December 7 and American bases in the Philippines on December 8, pushing the United States into a war that it had long wanted to avoid. This is a beautifully engraved 1780 map of the coast of Brazil, extending from the mouth of the Amazon River to the Baía de Todos los Santos. It names and marks the coastal borders of the Portuguese colonial Captaincies of Maranhão, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraiba, Olinda (actually Pernambuco, of which Olinda was the capital), and Sergipe. Coastal settlements and the mouths of rivers are named, and prominent mountain ranges near coastal areas are shown pictorially. PRICE: 250.00 USD

Each explorer's course is labeled, many with the month and year, and an arrow illustrating the direction they were traveling. Very little detail on the Antarctic continent itself is present. This is a gorgeous c. 1850 view of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The view illustrates a coastal portion of the city, with a monumental building at center. A three-masted ship appears in the foreground on the left and is flying two flags, one of which appears to be the flag of the British East India Company, but that makes very little sense if this is Brazil. Two boats in the foreground ferry supplies, including cattle, to the waiting ship. Buildings line the shore in the background. PRICE: 100.00 USD

Geographicus Rare & Antique Maps is located in Brooklyn, New York, and was founded by Kevin Brown in 1999. We are generalist antiquarians dealing in historic maps from all over the world and in all price ranges. Our enthusiasm, passion and devotion to scholarship is expressed in our meticulously researched studies of each map offering.  
Geographicus welcomes clients by appointment at our Brooklyn location.  Our hours are Noon to 6PM Monday through Friday, but other appointments, including evenings and weekends, are typically available on request.

We are located in the ground floor of a limestone townhouse in the historic Stuyvesant Heights district of Brooklyn.  The closest subway stop is Gates Avenue on the J train.  Commuting time is about 20 minutes from the Financial District.
