Time to set the Christmas season off! December is all but a day a way, which means most of us are breaking out the boxes of decorations and getting our Christmas crafts lined up. This Christmas, we are all gonna need decorations to do the heavy lifting of cheering everybody up as we carry on in this all consuming quarantine. Sells of Christmas decorations are soaring as we all prepare for a small, at home Christmas celebrations. In order to decorate the way that is needed to elicit serious joy, you will need the help of your willing residents. Create large bags of goodies that can be handed out and used to decorate their doors. Some examples of things to include in the bags are:
  • Poster Boards
  • Crepe Paper
  • Construction Paper
  • Pom Poms
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Cardboard
  • Gift Tags
  • Pine Cones
  • Ribbon
  • Garland
  • Googly Eyes
  • Ornaments
  • Glitter
  • Glue
  • Tape
  • Scissors
Hand the bags out as soon as possible in order to give residents time to pull their decorations ideas together before being judged closer to Christmas day. Pre-select several judges to oversee the contest and lay out categories from which to award winners. Some suggestions for categories are:

Most Traditional
Most Modern
Most Original
Most Entertaining

The day of the contest, create a Christmas food cart to go around with the judges. Hand out Christmas snacks, refreshments and play some Christmas music. Announce winners and place ribbons on the winning doors. For prizes, have the kitchen create you some special Christmas deserts or you could create Christmas gift baskets for the winners.

*Variation: Invite your nurse's stations to participate in their own decorating contest, too! This will insure the entire facility is decked out from hall to hall!
