End of year highlights from UCL's Global Engagement Office

2020 has been an exceptionally challenging year, but it hasn't been without its share of tremendous successes and milestones. This year, GEO celebrates five years since the launch of UCL's Global Engagement Strategy (GES). More on the achievements of the first five years of the GES here.
The end of this year also sees the closure of UCL Qatar. In its 10 years of operation, the institution has been awarded more than £11m for research and conducted 100 research projects. Learn more about UCL Qatar's legacy here.

UCL strengthens Max Planck partnership

In the autumn, GEO launched the Global Engagement Funds, Cities Partnerships Programme Funds and 10 Strategic Partner Funds to help UCL academics collaborate with colleagues around the world.
During these unprecedented times, applicants have been encouraged to think about how they can adapt their research during the pandemic. Here are some examples of how last year's funding recipients swiftly reshaped their ways of working:

Professor Andrea Révész (UCL Institute of Education) is collaborating with partners in Italy and the USA to resurrect historic locations as virtual models to help students learn English. Find out how she adapted her research.

Dr Nathaniel Morris (UCL History) used the Global Engagement Funds to kick-start a collaboration with colleagues in Mexico, France and the USA exploring the production of illicit opium. Find out how he has adapted his research.

Funding opportunities
Please note that some funding calls have an institutional cap and, if so, applications must first be referred to the research coordination office in your relevant UCL school, who leads the internal selection process. You should also seek approval from your department and UCL Research Services in line with the usual approval process.

UCL Global Engagement Funds
The Global Engagement Funds can support a wide variety of activities and research initiatives between UCL academics and global partners. Between £500-£5,000 is available per project. Deadline: 13 Dec 2020

UCL Cities Partnerships Programme Funds
The Cities Funds support academic activity involving UCL individuals and a partner based in the city-regions of Rome, Paris and/or Stockholm. Up to £5,000 is available per project. Deadline: 13 Dec 2020

The UN SDGs: Pathways to Achievement
This funding call from UCL Grand Challenges and the Global Engagement Office will fund cross-disciplinary activities that generate societal impact for the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Deadline: 13 January 2021

JSPS London Call for Pre/Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Japan
This programme provides the opportunity for short-term visits for pre- and post-doctoral UK-based researchers to carry out research with leading research groups at Japanese universities and institutions. Deadline: 26 Jan 2020

AHRC-GCRF Urgency Grants pilot
Recognising the challenges facing LMICs, the AHRC, on behalf of UKRI, launched this scheme with GCRF to provide an accelerated funding outlet for arts and humanities research priorities. Deadline: 31 Jan 2021

UKRI rolling COVID-19 funding call for international co-investigators
International co-investigators from any country are invited to submit proposals for short-term projects addressing the health, social, economic, cultural and environmental impacts of COVID-19. Deadline: Apply at any time

UCL South Asia Regional Network Meeting
