Young Adult Alternative Break Day

All young adults are invited to join us for one-day of service and fun. Several universities have canceled their spring breaks this year, so we're offering this in lieu of our traditional Alternative Spring Break. We will be working at St. Martin in the Field Episcopal Church in Edwardsville, KS (near KC) in the morning, have lunch in their parish hall, then go to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art together in the afternoon. Thursday, January 7. Please RSVP to Anastasia (internksu@episcopal-ks.org) or Clarke (internku@episcopal-ks.org). Free for young adults, ages 18-24ish.

Miqra and Mini-Miqra registration now open!

MIQRA (meek-rah) is a weekend retreat that focuses on the Bible and allows young people to discover what’s in it, why we should care, and how to read it. Due to the on-going pandemic, we anticipate Miqra will need to be online this year. We’ve scheduled multiple sessions over the traditional Miqra weekend, January 15-18, and invite all youth in grades 6-12 and young adults age 18-24ish to join us. There are multiple online sessions, attend just one or all of them!

Miqra readers needed!

While we cannot have Miqra in-person this year, the reading will continue, online! All members of the diocese are invited to help with the reading, Friday, January 15, 10 am through Sunday, January 18, 10 am. Sign-up for a reading slot, log-on to Zoom at your time, find out from the previous reader where to begin, and read! You may recruit/invite others to read with you and split the time up however you wish. Just make sure someone replaces you before you leave. Sign-up for time slots to read here: volunteersignup.org/ETBWT

Miqra stocking caps available

Instead of t-shirts we’ll be offering embroidered Miqra stocking caps this year. They will be dark grey hats with a red brim and a pop-pom on top. The Hebrew Miqra letters will be embroidered on the rim. Order yours online and they will be shipped in early January. Hats are $8 plus $5 shipping & handling. Order here: https://tinyurl.com/MiqraHat (one hat is included with registration in Miqra or Mini-Miqra).

Join us for Youth & Young Adult Worship on January 17, 11 am!
Sign-up to help lead!

Our next youth and young adult worship service on Zoom and YouTube live is on January 17 at 11 am. Help us make this a worship by and for young people! If you would like to be a reader, preacher, or provide music for these services, sign-up here. Otherwise, mark your calendar and save the date! It will be a typical Rite II Eucharist service with spiritual communion. We will have an informal "coffee hour" after the service when you can catch up with other Zoom attendees.
The Wonder of C.S. Lewis
by Deacon Mary Donovan

C.S. Lewis, the Oxford Don whom we celebrate in November, was a writer of great talent and insight. His Chronicles of Narnia are children’s fantasy books but also Christian theology books. Reading the tales of Narnia, the fantastic land beyond and through the wardrobe, is a delightful allegory of our faith.

In The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, the Christ figure is the lion Aslan, and the children Peter, Susan, Edward and Lucy are the leaders of the war against the White Witch. Pure fantasy and yet they remain totally a Christian saga of good warring against evil, of Christ’s redemptive power. The lion Aslan is sacrificed on an altar of stone and comes back to life, is resurrected. The children each are given a gift to combat the White Witch, and with the gifts they succeed in taking back Narnia, frozen in ice, to a land of warmth. Lucy is given a healing cordial and a knife to defend herself. Susan gets a magical horn to summon help and a quiver of arrows that never miss. Peter gets a sword and a shield. Even when the children don’t see Aslan, and fear he has left them, they know he is with them.

In the Chronicles, C.S. Lewis gave us a story to recognize the Kingdom of God. Each of us has a gift, and we need to find it, to recognize it, and to use it for good. Maybe not arrows, maybe not healing cordials, but we each have our uniqueness in our own Chronicles that we can learn to use for the Kingdom. May we never walk past a closet door again without stopping to wonder, what is beyond that door?

A Simple Advent Practice for Parents

As we come to the end of the calendar year, the beginning of a new church year and we prepare for the celebration of Christ’s human birth, I wondered if a simple prayer practice could be helpful in the midst of all of this. There are four weeks of Advent and each has a one-word theme: peace, hope, joy and love. In some ways Advent is an observance of Mary and Joseph’s pregnancy, the waiting for their child to come into the world. Ever since becoming a parent myself, I see this season in a whole new way and hear the stories leading up to Christmas through the lens of a parent. So each week whether in your already established daily prayer practice or in a journal or talking with your co-parent or friends consider those things about being a parent that bring you peace. What are the things that you hope for in yourself as a parent and for your children. Where are the joys in parenting? What are some ways you can speak to that immeasurable love that you have for your child? Each week try to focus on the peace, hope, joy, and love that comes with being a parent. Happy Advent!
