The Wonder of C.S. Lewis
by Deacon Mary Donovan
C.S. Lewis, the Oxford Don whom we celebrate in November, was a writer of great talent and insight. His Chronicles of Narnia are children’s fantasy books but also Christian theology books. Reading the tales of Narnia, the fantastic land beyond and through the wardrobe, is a delightful allegory of our faith.
In The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, the Christ figure is the lion Aslan, and the children Peter, Susan, Edward and Lucy are the leaders of the war against the White Witch. Pure fantasy and yet they remain totally a Christian saga of good warring against evil, of Christ’s redemptive power. The lion Aslan is sacrificed on an altar of stone and comes back to life, is resurrected. The children each are given a gift to combat the White Witch, and with the gifts they succeed in taking back Narnia, frozen in ice, to a land of warmth. Lucy is given a healing cordial and a knife to defend herself. Susan gets a magical horn to summon help and a quiver of arrows that never miss. Peter gets a sword and a shield. Even when the children don’t see Aslan, and fear he has left them, they know he is with them.
In the Chronicles, C.S. Lewis gave us a story to recognize the Kingdom of God. Each of us has a gift, and we need to find it, to recognize it, and to use it for good. Maybe not arrows, maybe not healing cordials, but we each have our uniqueness in our own Chronicles that we can learn to use for the Kingdom. May we never walk past a closet door again without stopping to wonder, what is beyond that door?

A Simple Advent Practice for Parents
As we come to the end of the calendar year, the beginning of a new church year and we prepare for the celebration of Christ’s human birth, I wondered if a simple prayer practice could be helpful in the midst of all of this. There are four weeks of Advent and each has a one-word theme: peace, hope, joy and love. In some ways Advent is an observance of Mary and Joseph’s pregnancy, the waiting for their child to come into the world. Ever since becoming a parent myself, I see this season in a whole new way and hear the stories leading up to Christmas through the lens of a parent. So each week whether in your already established daily prayer practice or in a journal or talking with your co-parent or friends consider those things about being a parent that bring you peace. What are the things that you hope for in yourself as a parent and for your children. Where are the joys in parenting? What are some ways you can speak to that immeasurable love that you have for your child? Each week try to focus on the peace, hope, joy, and love that comes with being a parent. Happy Advent!
