The Mental Health Tool of COVID-19

Most everyone would agree that the year 2020 has been unprecedented:A novel coronavirus causing a pandemic and social isolation due to COVID-19 precautions, a significant down turn in the economy with increased unemployment, civil unrest with violence, historic wildfires with widespread property damage and loss of life, electrical power outages and a seemingly endless and highly contentious presidential election. No doubt something significant was left unmentioned, but these are all examples of serious life stressors that threaten to cause increases in anxiety, depression, substance abuse, post traumatic stress disorder and suicide which will dramatically add to the already high death toll caused by COVID-19.

In the pre-Covid era it was estimated that 17.3 million Americans had depression which contributed to over 48,000 deaths annually due to suicide. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. Currently, almost 1/2 of all Americans admit that the coronavirus is harming their mental health.

Understand your county’s Covid19 tier status

Every county in California is assigned to a tier based on its test positivity and adjusted case rate.

In light of the recent, unprecedented surge in rate of increase of cases, the following changes are effective until further notice:

Tier assignments may occur any day of the week and may occur more than once a week when the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) determines that the most recent reliable data indicate that immediate action is needed to address COVID-19 transmission in a county.
Counties may be moved back more than one tier if CDPH determines that the data supports more intensive intervention. Key considerations will include the rate of increase in new cases and/or test positivity, more recent data as noted below, public health capacity, and other epidemiological factors.
The most recent reliable data will be used to complete the assessment.
In light of the extreme circumstances requiring immediate action, counties will be required to implement any sector changes the day following the tier announcement.
