Tree Planting Fortnight 2020

Between Nov 16-27th we held our 9th annual school's Tree Planting Fortnight in Harmony Woods!

  • During the fortnight, 21 standard trees and 250 hedgerow trees were planted by 10 school groups plus volunteers from the community.

  • We were able to buy the 26 British native standard-sized trees thanks to a grant from The Tree Council.

  • On Saturday, December 5th, the community tree, a whitebeam, and the remaining 4 school dedicated trees will be planted by families and friends of the schools, the Mayor, Cllr Hatley, and the ATU youth team -completing the planting of the arboretum.

  • 10 schools came up over the fortnight out of the 26 that have signed up to take part. The other 16 schools will join us in the new year to add more whips to the hedge (supplied by The Woodland Trust) and to hang their own special labels on their arboretum trees, taking the total number of trees planted up to the yearly amount of 1000.

  • Some schools have dedicated their arboretum tree to someone special - and all of the trees are dedicated to the lives affected by the pandemic. The planting of the community Whitebeam on the 5th symbolises a time to reflect on the year, the generosity and kindnesses of community, and the lives lost and lives changed.

  • Early next year the arboretum will have a chalk scrape and wildflower meadow developed within it. Chalk wildflowers will be sowed in the centre of the looped walk, and the pond will be extended.

  • 3 of the schools each brought along and planted around 20 of their own trees that they had nurtured in their school nursery beds since they had been given to them by us last winter.

  • In the middle of the fortnight, we held a fundraising quiz night! It was a lot of fun, a great way to spend the evening and we were pleased to welcome 80 attendees who together raised an outstanding £740! The most we've ever raised from our annual quiz night! THANK YOU! All money raised will go towards the new woodland cabin.

Now that the new arboretum is taking shape we can't wait to see it in spring! We hope you will come and visit it, too.

A huge THANK YOU goes out to all the lovely volunteers whose hard work ensured that the fortnight was a great success.
Tree planting over the winter months

We still have around 750 trees to get in the ground, including several hundred meters of a new hedgerow.  We still have school groups booked in to plant trees in the woods early next year, and we need volunteers to help us run the day.

How can you help?
  • Volunteer to plant trees during our Saturday workdays (every 2nd Saturday of the month, morning and afternoon sessions)
  • Plant trees and help school groups during our Monday workdays (every Monday 10am - 1pm)
  • If you have a child attending a local school, bring them up to the woods on a weekend workday so that they do not miss this important opportunity to add their own tree to the woods (please let us know which school you can represent).
To sign up, please email volunteers@andovertrees.org.uk.

Our site is Covid secure and working to government guidelines and the safety of our volunteers is of the utmost importance to us. We have plenty of space to ensure you do not socially mix with anyone outside your 'bubble' at all times, and you will not be in close contact with school children or other volunteers.
No experience of tree planting is needed, all will be explained and participation is FREE.

We look forward to working with you! :)

Fundraising for the Woodland Classroom

We are very excited to say that spring and summer 2021 will finally see the construction of the new woodland classroom and community space in Harmony Woods!
The construction will involve the Carpenter's Fellowship, we are honoured to have been selected as their 2021 charitable project. This means the cabin frame will be crafted from tree trunks (by hand!) and raised (by hand!) by this team of very skilled crafters and carpenters - and we, the local community, will be able to get involved with the process.

However, we still need to raise the remainder of the funds to complete the build.
Here are the ways in which you can help us achieve this goal:
  • Purchase some of the wonderful green craft products that our volunteer team have been busy creating over the past few months. Including willow bird feeders, ash twig pencils, lavender bags, personalised wooden discs and willow wreaths. We are happy to arrange collection points for you to pick up your products. We will also be at the Andover high street market on Saturday 12th December. Please email eve.johnson@andovertrees.org.uk to make a purchase.

  • Select ATU as your charitable organisation on Amazon Smile - and donate to ATU every time you shop through smile.amazon.co.uk.

  • Make a cash donation via Global GivingDonations can be enhanced by Gift Aid - and on Dec 1st, Giving Tuesday 2020, donations will also receive match-funding.

Funds raised will go towards the building of an eco-friendly woodland classroom and community space so that we can offer more opportunities to you, our community. Outdoor learning, community workshops, volunteering. Help us scale up, branch out, offer more and make a bigger, positive difference.

THANK YOU for your support.

About the Andover's Ash project

'Andover’s Ash’ builds on ‘One Ash’ and ‘Ash Tree Stream’ and will connect the Andover community to the Ash trees and chalk streams from which the town takes its name.

Timber from One Ash will be used by many; stories and accounts of contact with local Ash Trees will be mapped, documented and shared; locally collected songs and folklore will tell tales of living by the stream, further referencing the origins of the town’s name

Contributing to Voices Unveiled, which culminates in a festival in 2022, we will celebrate the final tree planting of, and all work created during, the 10-year ‘Harmony Woods’ project. Every aspect of creativity will be documented and shared in exhibitions and performances in the town.

Thank you for your support.

Covid-19

In order to adhere to the government’s guidelines, we would like to make you aware that:

  • Volunteer workdays; our monthly Saturday and weekly Monday workdays will resume through a sign-up-in-advance system.
    • Those of you that may walk through Harmony Woods as your daily exercise are welcome to carry out an individual task if you wish to. If you are interested in this idea, please contact us for more information.
    • We also ask for help in monitoring the site’s condition. If you notice anything untoward in Harmony Woods, we would really appreciate it if you could let us know. Thank you.
  • Our schools project work has resumed, but there are still additional resources online for those of you that would like to do some activities at home or outdoors.

We are still working behind the scenes on strategic planning, writing funding bids, project prep and all sorts of admin tasks. If you would like to volunteer in any of these areas we would love to hear from you - please get in touch. We can still be reached via our website and online via our social media pages.

We hope you all stay safe and we look forward to seeing you all again soon. x
