Trapping Reform On The Go!

Trapping Reform is Moving Forward

The Thanksgiving holiday, a time to give thanks, is one of our favorites. We have much to be grateful for even with the difficulties during the past year. Thank you for your unwavering support throughout the last few months as we have moved trapping reform forward.

A Suite of Potential Changes to Trapping Regulations.

1) On November 17 the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission (WGFC) moved to ban large power snares. Department employees will draft a large power-trap regulation for commissioners’ action at upcoming meetings.

The Interim Legislative Committee (TRW) will hear recommendations for two bills  on December 8, 2020.

2) For WGFD Legislative authority to prohibit trapping near popular recreation areas, including heavily used trails. This would include predatory and furbearer animals.
3) To require education for would-be trappers born after Jan. 1, 2000.

These recommendations are a step forward and should be treated as such, but although this is a shift, we are aware that these are baby steps. Your letters, phone calls, conversations, and comments have moved us to this step, and now we need to ask for more. We are disappointed that the Commission did not address charges that trapping itself is cruel and abusive, despite one person pointing out that trapping contradicts the agency’s mission to conserve wildlife and serve people.

Heads Up - Act Now!

Governor Gordon to appoint two new WGF Commissioners - YOU may qualify

The world is changing rapidly around us, including wildlife management science and the methods by which management boards include their communities in their decisions. Our Game and Fish Commission membership is homogeneous and has been for a long time. As we review the statutes governing the WGFC, it’s clear that the selection of the next two WGFC members provides an opportunity to honor the traditional process while embracing the evolution of wildlife management. We are counting on the Governor to make accessibility and diverse representation in wildlife management a priority.

The two upcoming commission seats will be from District 1 Goshen, and District 5 Park.  If you would like to apply for an open seat, you must reside in one of these counties.  The application can be found on this website.  Applications need to be in this week!  Note:  The commission keeps the board diverse by rotating between the counties and not more than seventy-five percent (75%) of the appointed commissioners shall be of the same political party.

#GivingTuesday Fundraiser
December 1, 2020

#Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for people around the world to stand together in unity - to use their individual power of generosity to remain connected and heal.

Our #GivingTuesday goal is $2K. You can donate on our Facebook, Instagram, or our website page.

Contributions to Wyoming Untrapped will support our mission to reform trapping regulations in Wyoming, to educate and lead the public to show up, get informed, testify and motivate for change.  As our public lands become increasingly vital for people pets and wildlife, it is crucial that there are trap-free areas where we can feel safe, and wildlife can roam free of harm.

"Finn" Caught in a Leghold

Three-year-old golden trapped in
Vedauwoo Recreation Area
Medicine Bow National Forest

A dog trapping incident was reported on Saturday, Nov 14, 2020 in the VEDAUWOO RECREATION AREA in the Medicine Bow National Forest, Wyoming near a campground and climbing area.

A visiting couple from out of state was hiking in the area with their two dogs which were off-leash and nearby. One of the dogs, “Finn”,  was along the river when he got caught in a leghold trap. It was likely that he stopped to check out whatever bait was used. Finn “screamed the whole time and it took us a few minutes to figure out the trap. But we eventually were able to open it up and release his leg. He had a small laceration on his leg, but otherwise okay once free. It was traumatizing for us as owners though, to hear him scream like that and have to act fast to figure out what to do. We had no idea that traps were even something to worry about while exploring public lands.”

A WGFD investigation resulted in an issuance of a warning to the trapper for failing to check leghold traps within 72 hours.
