Next week (December 13) join us for a unique worship experience as several members of our congregation offer songs that invite us to welcome the coming of Immanuel. Our prayer is that you and your family will be blessed as we hear together the old story told in a special way. This service will be at both our 8:30 am and 10:30 am worship services and will be broadcast on Facebook Live at 10:30 am. If you are planning to join us in person we have already opened up our reservation link for next week and we encourage you to reserve your space soon so that we can make preparations to accommodate as many in worship as possible under our current guidelines.

"A Highway for God"

The purpose of Advent is preparation for the coming of the Lord. I love Christmas. However, I believe we shortchange preparation for the Lord’s arrival when we celebrate it early. The cultural practice of starting Christmas the day after Thanksgiving for economic reasons creeps into the church. When we sing “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come” one week and “Joy to the World, the Lord Is Come” the next, something is missing. The Lord has come but we are unprepared. In Jesus’ parables, the unprepared are cast into the outer darkness. Observing Advent prepares us for the dawn of eternal Light.

The prophet Isaiah says, “Prepare the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God” (Isaiah 40:3b). I find it remarkable that the Lord asks us to prepare a highway for Him to come. The Almighty and Everlasting God could make His own highway anywhere at any time without us doing a thing. Yet, God desires that we thirst for His presence and long for His coming. Psalm 42:2 is an expression of this longing: “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and behold the face of God?” Our thirsting and longing for the Lord prepares a highway for our God.

Waiting and longing for a future reality can be difficult and seem unnecessary. If you are like me, you want to return to normalcy in our church. You long for the day when you do not have to make reservations to attend or wear masks and maintain a safe physical distance when you are here. The promising news of effective vaccines on the way raises our hopes that we can soon worship more like we did before the virus. Relaxing our protocols prematurely, before the vaccine reduces the risk of transmission, would be careless. “Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.” And so, we wait in hope.

Advent is a waiting period in which we practice daily disciplines of study, prayer, generosity, and service while longing for the coming of the Lord. This active and eager waiting prepares the way in our hearts and schedules for His arrival. These are the necessary disciplines of Advent that prepare us for the coming of Christ.

Jesus was born approximately 2,020 years ago. The act of remembering his birth is more than celebrating his birthday. In Greek, the word anamnesis means recalling the past to transform the present. The event being remembered is brought into and transforms present reality. Christ is born anew in us and among us at Christmas. During Advent, we are also waiting and longing for the Second Coming of Christ to establish His Kingdom. The paradox of Advent is that Christ is both with us and is coming soon. Advent magnifies what some have called “the already but not yet” of the Kingdom of God. His Kingdom was inaugurated at Jesus’ birth and will culminate when He returns.

What this says to me is that keeping Advent does not have to be a time of austerity, of doing without. You are not required to deny yourself candy canes and Christmas carols until Christmas Eve. Rather, Advent is our intentional practice of anticipating and yet holding back until the Day of His birth. Isaiah 40:3 declares, “But those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Waiting is necessary preparation for celebrating with authentic joy the coming of the Lord.

Yours in waiting,
Hughey

WORSHIP THIS WEEK

December 6, 2020
8:30 and 10:30 a.m.

Don't forget to let us know you are coming! In order to stay safe and socially distant, we are still limiting the number of persons we can host in the sanctuary for each service. Therefore, as attendance numbers increase it is CRUCIAL that you complete a reservation each week to ensure we can accommodate your family joining us in person. We have a quick and easy way to do this. Please CLICK THIS RESERVATION LINK and let us know that you plan to be with us on Sunday morning. Thanks in advance for helping us serve you in the best way possible.

Attention UMW members:  Due to Covid-19, we will not have a General Meeting in December. Instead of doing cookie trays, we are delivering poinsettias. If you can help deliver these, please be at the church at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 7.

Ignite Youth News
The Ignite Youth are still meeting every other week. However, to accommodate for the holidays, the youth will be meeting on the 6th and 13th of December. On the 6th, we will be having youth in our youth space at the church, but on the 13th, we will be participating in a Christmas Bonfire at the Underwoods' home!
Merry Christmas from the Decatur FUMC youth group!
Hi friends! I hope y'all are enjoying this Advent season so far. Here are some important things to note from our Children's Ministry: 🙂
  • We are inviting our wee people to stay with their families during worship this Sunday for Communion. The Children's Ministry will have wee worship bags for our children joining us in worship.
  • Since we can't all be together yet, we are having an at-home movie evening on Sunday, December 13th. Keep a wee eye out on your doorsteps for your movie box with everything required to have a lovely movie night with your family!
  • During Children's Church this week our main point was "Nothing is impossible with God". Even if we are young or old, we are important to God and can be used to do BIG things for the Kingdom!
  • Hopefully, you will have seen that a new virtual ministry began last week, called Wednesday Watchings. Join us on Wednesday evenings via pre-recorded videos on YouTube and Facebook!! Here is the link to this week's video - https://youtu.be/Ya6TS8wLgZs

Join us for Adult Sunday School

We have resumed Sunday School for our adults and we would love for you to join us! We gather from 9:30 am until 10:15 am. Classes follow the social distancing guidelines established by our Public Health Response Team.

At this time, we have three options (two in-person and one online) for you to join:
  • NEW DIMENSIONS - a long-established class who have decided to meet in person. They are currently studying the book of Hebrews. If you are interested in joining them, please contact Sheila Davis so that she can account for you when considering room size and keep you in the loop for class announcements. This class is currently meeting in ROOM 352.
  • CONNECTIONS -  for those whose regular class is not meeting at this time or who don't have a regular class, but wish to meet in person. This class will be participating in a special Advent study through the end of the year and then will be using a curriculum based on the Revised Common Lectionary (a weekly pattern of scriptures that follows the Christian year). This class meets in ROOM 350 (Ministers' Conference Room).
  • ONLINE CONNECTIONS, will be an online ZOOM class for those who are not able to meet in person.  It will also be from 9:30 am to 10:15 am and will follow the same curriculum pattern and the in-person CONNECTIONS class. Any person is welcome to join, but you will need an invitation to enter the meeting. Please e-mail Toby as well if you would like to join this group.
Don't Forget to Return Your Pledge Card!

We also know that some of you are unable to return to in-person events at this time. Please return your pledge card that you received in the mail or we also have a "digital" pledge card on our website, so that you can take part in helping our leadership plan for our 2021 budget.
