“Since Clarion, I have felt less bound by the idea of limits.” Elinam Agbo, Clarion Class of 2019

Dear Clarion Community,

Although in 2020 we had to postpone the Clarion Writers’ Workshop for the first time in fifty years, it was wonderful to see so many of you at our online panel discussions, offering your support and well wishes. This Giving Tuesday, if you are able, we’d love your support again to help us rebuild our scholarship fund and contribute to the workshop’s running costs.

We hope all of the participants who missed out this year will be able to join us in 2021 and that we can provide support to everyone who needs it. Many students who attend Clarion come from marginalized or traditionally underrepresented backgrounds, and they go on to enrich the science fiction, fantasy and horror community with their voices.

They’ll be learning from some of the world’s most renowned science fiction, fantasy and horror authors in what is sometimes called an MFA in six weeks. By donating this Giving Tuesday, you’ll be helping to train the next generation of brilliant writers, like Elinam Agbo, who attended Clarion in 2019. Elinam’s short stories have won numerous awards and have been published in PEN America Debut Short Stories, the Nimrod International Journal and the Baltimore Review, among others.

Elinam says of her workshop experience: “Before Clarion, the idea of writing a story that would be read in a few days was daunting. But as I witnessed my classmates producing the most incredible work, I was inspired to take risks and explore new genres and narrative structures. My Clarion instructors helped me believe in myself, and my class encouraged me to have fun in my writing.”

Every penny of your donation will be spent helping low-income students attend, covering our overheads, or providing a stipend to our brilliant instructors.  We currently subsidize every student by around $1,300 and are committed to keeping the workshop as affordable and accessible as possible.

During this tough year, many of us have turned to new and old favourite works of science fiction and fantasy to help us cope.  Curious about what impact this science fictional present will have on the ways we imagine the future? This Giving Tuesday, you can help future Clarion grads like Elinam attend a workshop that will change their lives, and give readers the chance to discover their stories, books, and ideas in years to come.

Please also consider signing up for automatic monthly donations – just a few dollars per month can make a huge difference to Clarion and its students. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.

We know many worthy causes are in need of assistance this year, so thank you very much for your consideration. Wishing you and your loved ones a safe start to December.

Kind regards,
