In 2019, 2017, 2016, 2015, and 2014, we published shopping ideas for folks who are shopping for geeks on their holiday list. Those lists are still very valid for folks trying to buy for that hard-to-shop-for nerd on their list. However, this year is not like any other year (pandemics have a tendency to do that). Realistically, we have a hard time justifying writing up a gift guide when the world is all topsy-turvy. So what do we recommend? Today is #GivingTuesday. To quote the site:
GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement that unleashes the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and their world. GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past seven years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.
So today would be a great day to give the gift of a charitable contribution (time or money or both) to your favorite organization (we give to several local and international organizations if you’re looking for ideas). Our entire team – all us hard-to-shop-for folks – would always love a charitable gift given on our behalf. Gifts to those organizations will go a long way right now as many traditional fund-raising opportunities have been shut down because of COVID.
Speaking of the holidays, a reminder that our offices will be closed the following days this upcoming season (emergency service is available for CompleteCare clients for network down emergencies):
- December 11 - December 12 for End-of-Year Company Meetings
- December 24 - December 25 for Christmas Holiday
- January 1, 2021 for New Years
All of us at Weston wish you a safe and enjoyable holiday season! |
If you’re working in a large multi-tab spreadsheet in Excel, you know it’s sometimes hard to keep track of values getting updated as you change things around. But the Watch Window is a great way to keep an eye on a set of cells as you update data all over your massive spreadsheet. |
Ransomware is a truly nasty piece of malware, holding your files hostage until payment is made. We’ve posted many stories about ransomware and its affects and ways you can recover from it, but there is some good news out there. Trickbot, which has become a serious nuisance infecting over a million computers, has taken a bit of a blow with Microsoft’s announcement that they’ve taken out a bunch of the command and control servers used by the malware. Just the same, the Trickbot folks are still active as CISA, FBI, and HHS published an alert about this (and other ransomware) targeting healthcare and the public sector. We like to take a multi-pronged approach to ransomware by locking down local permissions, blocking emails that deliver these kinds of scams, centralized and monitored anti-virus software, using a local agent specifically built to monitor, stop and remediate malware like this, and making sure you have a good disaster recovery plan. Contact us today to learn more about how we can protect your network from the worst case scenario. |
In typography and graphic design, kerning is the process of adjusting the spacing between characters in to achieve a particular result (generally to make it look nicer or easier to read). If you don’t have your letter spacing done properly, things may look a bit funky. While professional graphic design programs make kerning changes easy, Microsoft Word hides the feature a bit. Here’s how you make kerning changes in Microsoft Word. |
Email is a lifeblood for any business. But as we rely more and more on email to communicate internally and with clients, the sheer amount of email that you get on a daily basis may be overwhelming. The standard Outlook new email alert can just become background noise if you get a bunch of email on a daily basis. But what if you’re an Outlook user and need to make sure you don’t miss emails from a particular client or about a particular project? Create a custom alert in Outlook that will grab your attention. |
One of our big goals with CompleteCare Managed IT services is to provide the fastest, friendliest and most professional technology support to you and your business. We do this by providing direct access to our techs. Click here to learn more on how you can get direct access to our techs and bypass the phone tree (as Jake -- the guy that usually answers the phone -- is a nice enough guy, he's not nearly as technically useful as the folks on our support team). |
