The 2020 US election occurred in the middle of a once-in-a-century pandemic, yet the voter turnout was the highest in 120 years.  After all the mail-in ballots were counted, former Vice President Joseph Biden was declared the winner of the popular vote and the Electoral College vote by a wide margin.  Yet, Donald Trump refused to concede defeat for two months after the results became clear and mounted a series of court challenges to fight the results, including taking his baseless claims of fraud to the Supreme Court.  Even more unprecedented, mobs of Trump supporters assaulted the Capitol building on Jan. 6, forcing an evacuation of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.  In the aftermath of that insurrection in Washington, the US House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump for his role in inciting the insurrection and not stopping the mob action, making him the first president in US history to be impeached twice.  To help understand this historic US election and its aftermath, SCPKU on Jan. 13, 2021 convened a distinguished roundtable titled “The 2020 U.S. Election: Stress Test for American Democracy.”  Read more here.

On January 26, Tang Ning Reception Hall hosted a discussion on "China-US Education Prospects, Where Is the Current Road to Studying Abroad."  The event was simultaneously webcasted on multiple platforms, and nearly one million viewers participated online.  Panel speakers were Cheng Jiashu (Josh), executive director SCPKU, Professor Xiao Zhixing, founder of Arete college and chairman of Center for Leadership and Executive Coaching and Huang Jingsheng, former managing director of Harvard Center (Shanghai).  Read more here.

The Stanford Center at Peking University organized a holiday gathering near the end of 2020 to welcome both undergrad and graduate students newly enrolled at Stanford, but due to the pandemic had to spend their fall quarter in China. This provided the first opportunity for these students to bond and meet their classmates.  We were hoping to hold this at SCPKU but continuing COVID concerned made that impossible.  Students reflected on their experiences and shared their stories about their quarter in China.  Read the student stories here.
Prof. Ezra Vogel, the Henry Ford II Professor of the Social Sciences Emeritus at Harvard University and one of the country's leading experts on East Asia, passed away on December 20, 2020 at 90.  Professor Vogel had a close relationship with the SCPKU. He first visited the Center as a Mingde scholar in 2015, when he conducted research and gave several lectures, including on China-Japan Relations at SCPKU. Over the past five years, he continued to be a frequent visitor. While was widely admired by scholars and students, Ezra Vogel also made a lasting impression on the staff at SCPKU who remember him for his refined style, humble attitude, burning curiosity about Chinese affairs, and conscientious work style. They so much looked forward to working with him during his planned visit again in 2021. Peggy Zou, SCPKU Program and Administrative Coordinator, wrote a moving memory of Prof. Vogel.  We have reproduced it here in original Chinese.

On December 26th, a group of American university center directors gathered at the Yale Beijing Center to discuss the future of international higher education in China.  Josh Cheng, SCPKU Executive Director, introduced Stanford’s efforts to support students, no matter what nationality or race, continuing their study and research during this turbulent year.  Read more here.

Due to Covid-19, all SCPKU Programs are on hold.  We hope that we will be able to resume our faculty and student programs in the  coming year.  Please stay tuned.
