  Truman visits Dunedin

Not often you get to meet up with a Legend, and last night's gathering with BarrieTruman was a cracker, as a bunch of old fitba identities met up with the Man and his wife Liz, and yarned away about, Times past,  or as Truman's book says, ' The Way we Were..'

A sprightly octogenarian Truman heads tomorrow, with a bunch of friends to do some cycling in Central Otago - good luck with the weather, Bas.
Nah, its not yer eyes. the lights were a bit dimmed thanks to Mr. Guinness, but recognisable are -  left to right :
Steve Fleming, Graham Marshall, Dougal McGowan, Bill Chisholm.
Front : Truman, Neil Mac, Rab, and Barry White
former NZFA Chairman Dave Lamont was late
and missed the pic but enjoyed the evening
Yes,  it was a privilege   to meet Barrie Truman and his wife Liz, last night as they visited old friends in Dunedin, ‘ My favourite City.’ Said the former international New Zealand coach.

And in turn, Truman is my most respected coach, having inspired my faltering first steps, to an eventual senior badge qualification, that brought me great satisfaction.

Truman is unique in haveing won the National League with his Wellington Diamond team in 1985 – so what ?
Well he did it with an all Kiwi team – No Imports, all Kiwis and that is surely the pinnacle of achievement for any coach anywhere.

Its comparable with the great Celtic team that won in 1967 the European Cup with a squad that all hailed from the immediate Glasgow area – another feat that will never be repeated.

Originally from Lincolnshire, he might have been an Otago coach when he applied for our provincial job  but for whatever reason, his Dunedin application was passed on to the NZFA and the rest is history as he was offered the National coaching position in 1970.

Not many coaches have taken a New Zealand touring team on tour to China where they played in front of 90,000 spectators, and the dedicated coach’s international record below is equally impressive.

However, Otago’s involvement was highlighted with the senior badge course that was run  in Queenstown at the opulent Trans Tours Hotel – who were then sponsors of the National League.

Compared to previous Spartan accommodation at the Meat Inspectors block in Lincoln, that Queenstown coaching course  made an indelible impression on all participants.

Roslyn’s Tom Smilie had to pull out of the course and a young student Neil Mackenzie stepped in, and has never looked back, going on to a lifetime involvement in southern football.

Others were Barney McGarry, Wally Hughes and myself. The two week course tested everyone’s stamina and intellect as intensive sessions were conducted in Queenstown heat, before gasping back up the steep hill to splosh into the hotels superb swimming pool.

Quality instruction was impressed on the group by Truman and Christchurch’s Terry Conley, and  everyone responded, from a couple of NZ Internationals, to ordinary club coaches from all over New Zealand.

Yet it was not all a ‘grind,’ many long term friendships were welded, as evening singing sessions and carousing took place.  Memorable Happy Days.

On to last night when a motley group welcomed Barrie and Liz.

They ranged from star striker of old, Barry White, and Caversham legend coach Steve Fleming, to former Otago CEO, coach and player Bill Chisholm, Dougal McGowan, Graham Marshall chairman of the Football South Board, former NZFA chairman, Dave Lamont ( who was late and missed the photoshoot,) and former NZ Soccer Writer of the Year, yours truly.

More bad news locally as the FSth Women lose to Auckland 3-nil,
Played Four won None, scored One, conceded 15, - not a good read.
and surrogate Canty get biffed 3-2 by Hamilton.
Both teams now placed bottom in their Lg Tables.
