Recap of VASI November virtual meeting

The November VASI virtual meeting held on November 18th was another great success.  As reminder our topic was "Airports from the ground up -- Secrets Only Pilot’s Know About Airports" our speaker was Tom Slater P.E.,  FAAST Coordinator Raleigh, North Carolina.

It was a fun interactive webinar and VERY informative.  I got a number of kudo's from the members about it and some even admitted that they learned a thing or two!  For example, I learned that the number of stripes on the threshold actually mean something and are not just decoration.  If you missed it don't despair as you can go to our Youtube channel (remember to like and subscribe) to see a full recording of this one as well as the previous events.

VASI WORKING FOR YOU:

Recently the Taxiway "E" extension (full length RW5/23) proposal was released by the Airport Director Mark Cervasio. This proposal included the demolition of the Southern end of Taxiway "C". See drawing for the affected area. The FAA, airport planners and consultants deemed this section of taxiway outdated in its design, and unnecessary for traffic flow. They felt that there would be adequate access with existing taxiways, using Taxiway  "B" from both ends of the runup/ramp area.

VASI fielded many comments concerning this project and at its latest Board Meeting decided to address the issue with Director Mark Cervasio. Thus a committee consisting of Dave Wimberly, Paul Cellecz and Peter Fazio met with Mark this past Tuesday, Dec 1 To start the meeting, Wimberly stated that VASI represents almost 99% of the "Users" of the airport, and that our point of view is different from that of planners. Not that theirs is wrong, just that we as pilots using the taxiways have a different view of the situation.

We stated that it didn't make sense to demolish a perfectly good taxiway. The bid contractor will certainly include the cost of this demolition in his bid. He must consider the man hours, heavy equipment, disposal of material, plus removal of numerous taxiway lights in his bid. We feel that this money could be better spent elsewhere. Also, our thinking is once that section of taxiway is gone, it will never come back! We discussed the traffic flow during a pilot's normal before takeoff procedure. For example, after an engine check in the runup area, the easiest most direct path to RW5 or RW31 is by using taxiway "C" to "E". In addition, this section of taxiway can also be used to avoid conflicts on "E" with after landing aircraft proceeding to the ramp. This area of the airport is a "Hotspot" and keeping this taxiway open results in safer traffic flow.

Mark was receptive to our concerns and requested a letter from VASI and EAA to support this request. He plans to use these letters to work with the FAA and Consultants to come up with a solution. So, the request is in the works and now we must wait for the answer. It is great that VASI has such good rapport with Airport Management that we could sit down and address your concerns directly with Mark. Just another example of VASI looking out for you at KVNC!!
