Greenways Volunteer Appreciation Event
Mon, Dec 7 @ 7 PM

We thank you! On December at 7pm, Greenways Land Trust is hosting an online Volunteer Appreciation Event over ZOOM. We will be celebrating the 5266 hours spent supporting projects in 2020. Greenways president, Sandra Milligan, and Greenways staff will introduce the event, followed by a ~20-minute video presentation highlighting volunteer activities. Some fellow volunteers will speak on their experience in the video, and there will be pictures from our projects this year.

Together, we are enhancing natural areas for people and wildlife while facilitating programs for the benefit of our community.

Please join us in congratulating our volunteers for their hard work! Email info@greenwaystrust.ca for event details.

Pilot batch of 'Strathcona Good Food Boxes' delivered
Bon Appetit Gold River!

Lots of happy faces yesterday, on December 2, in Gold River! With 65 boxes of approximately 1275 lbs of fresh veggies that were brought to the community, the project launch in Gold River was a great success. Greenways couldn't be happier about the pilot delivery! THANK-YOU to the amazing group of volunteers who jumped into action and supported Greenways' project manager, Katharine Lavoie.

WE NEED YOU!
  • SAYWARD | Please reach out if you are in/around Sayward and would like to help us launch the project in your community. We are seeking volunteers who can help us pack the boxes on the days of delivery [bi-weekly]. If you know somebody who might know somebody that wants to champion food security in Sayward, please send them our way!
  • SIGN UP FOR VOLUNTEERING HERE
  • SPREAD THE WORD | Let's talk about it, tell your friends and family, share our newsletter and Facebook posts. We appreciate every mention of this new project and it's good cause to make fresh, healthy, and safe produce both physically and financially accessible to those in remote North Island communities.

Project Update
Deltoid Balsamroot

Greenways has been busy working with our partners at the Wei Wai Kum First Nation and the City of Campbell River to continue to protect the red-listed deltoid balsamroot population on the Tyee Spit. On October 30, Greenways’ staff member, Katie worked alongside contractor and Wei Wai Kum member, Cory to remove all invasive Himalayan blackberry and Scotch broom plants from the critical habitat site.
On November 10, Greenways' volunteer Conservation Team planted 45 deltoid balsamroot seedlings into soils amended with fish compost at a translocation site in Dick Murphy Park on Tyee Spit.

ELDER'S GARDEN

The Covid-10 pandemic has meant that Greenways has not been able to do some of our planned activities, so we and our partners with the Wei Wai Kum First Nation have gotten creative and have been working together to build an Elder’s Garden at the Wei Wai Kum Elder's Centre. We installed raised garden beds on October 30, which will be used to grow traditional medicinal and edible plants, including deltoid balsamroot. Plans are also underway to add a greenhouse to this project to increase production and lengthen the growing season.

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSOR & PARTNERS

Greenways Land Trust would like to thank Environment and Climate Change Canada for funding to support conservation of this important population of deltoid balsamroot, and for their flexibility in using some of the funds towards the new Elder's Garden. We would also like to thank our partners at the Wei Wai Kum First Nation and the City of Campbell River for working with us.
