Dear Neighbor,
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. While this holiday season is unlike any we have experienced, I am inspired by our community's generosity and can-do attitude. I encourage everyone to continue to wear a mask, wash their hands, and practice social distancing. I am cautiously optimistic that we will soon have an approved COVID-19 vaccine, but we cannot let our guard down. The holiday season is traditionally filled with friends and family, but it is essential to remember that the more people that are a part of your "bubble," the greater the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Please, stay safe.
Last week, the City Council voted to approve the 2021 City of Chicago Municipal Budget, which I supported. You can read more about my vote here.
Also, at last week's meeting, I supported an ordinance to help our local restaurants; specifically, the emergency measure caps the fees that third-party delivery companies can charge restaurants for their service. Under this legislation, which was effective immediately, fees that third-party delivery companies can charge for their delivery services will be capped at 10 percent of the purchasing price, and total fees charged to participating restaurants, which include the delivery fees, will be capped at 15 percent. This ordinance will be in effect until indoor dining is allowed in Chicago at 40% capacity for 60 days.
Our Ward's own Northside Learning Center High School just completed a series of upgrades and additions. Northside serves students ages 14 to 22 with intellectual disabilities and impaired adaptive functioning. The renovations included a complete overhaul and upgrade to a decades-old greenhouse, murals inside the school, new furniture and fixtures, and fresh coats of paint across the building. I know the news of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) reopening has been a topic of discussion for many families in the Ward. I have been talking to CPS leadership and facilities management, and the Mayor's office about our concerns regarding CPS reopening and fiercely advocating for all CPS students' safety and well-being. As we move closer to CPS's proposed reopening date, I will continue to work with parents, principals, and CPS leadership to ensure the students' and the individual school community's safety.

To kick off the holiday season, I joined the Edgebrook Sauganash Chamber of Commerce and Special Service Area # 62 outside of the Polish National Alliance to flip the switch and illuminate the intersection of W. Peterson Ave. and N. Cicero Ave.

 The City of Chicago’s winter overnight parking ban goes into effect today, December 1. This ban restricts parking on critical roadways between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. every day of the week, regardless of snow. This ensures crews can quickly salt and plow the streets during inclement weather. Boy Scout Troop 904 Fundraiser

St. Edwards's Boy Scout Troop 904 is hosting a Spaghetti Dinner To Go on December 12 and 13. Proceeds will allow scouts to purchase new tents and attend summer camp next year.
Pick-up will be in front of St. Edward's Springfield Dominican Learning Center, located at 4447 N. Lowell Ave. Scouts will be on hand to bring your order to your car during:
- Saturday, December 12, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- Sunday, December 13, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Additionally, there is contactless delivery for Seniors who reside within 2 miles of the St. Edward campus. Deliveries will be made Sunday afternoon, December 13.

Infrastructure Improvement Update

Peoples Gas will begin phase 2 work to install a new gas main east of N. Nagle Ave. in the alley running from W. Huntington Ave. to W. Rosedale Ave. Construction will begin on Monday, December 7.

The City of Chicago's Emergency Travel Order remains in place. States are placed in three categories: Red, Orange, and Yellow. Colors signify what precautions are required when returning to Chicago. These designations are based on the status of the outbreak in the states and how the data compares to the situation in Chicago.

As of today, December 4, a free COVID-19 testing site is open at 3003 West Touhy Avenue.
- Appointments are needed to avoid overcrowding and allow for social distancing as this is an indoor site. Appointments are available each day.
- The site is open every day.
- Monday — Friday: 11 a.m. — 7 p.m.
- Saturday — Sunday: 9 a.m. — 2 p.m.
- All can be tested. No symptoms required.
- Simple swabs that go just a few centimeters into the nose will be used to conduct a PCR test.
- You will receive results in 3-5 days.
- Testing is free. No insurance is required. If you do have insurance, please bring your card.
- Free parking on site. There will be clear signage directing where to enter and exit the building.

Update: Property Tax Installment Due Date
|
|
The Cook County Board of Commissioners has waived late fees for two months on both property tax installments due in 2021.
- The First Installment of 2020 taxes is due March 2, 2021, with the application of late charges moved back to May 3, 2021.
- The Second Installment of 2020 taxes is due August 2, 2021, with the application of late charges moved back to October 1, 2021.

Future Founders is offering a free entrepreneur workshop to high school students. The one-day experience will be offered twice: Monday, December 21, and Tuesday, December 22.
During this time, you will get a crash course in startups, work with a team to build a creative business, and do it all with the guidance of your own startup coach (a real-life entrepreneur)! Accepted applicants are provided credit to a food delivery service as a lunch stipend and have the opportunity to compete for $125 cash among other exciting prizes!

Chicago Children's Choir will be hosting virtual Open Houses to introduce students to their after school Neighborhood Choir programs on December 7 and 8 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Youth 8 and older are invited to attend.
Students participating in the Neighborhood Choir program this year will receive beginner/intermediate choral training as well as the opportunity to participate in innovative and unique Arts Enrichment classes.
