Working together for a healthy,
connected catchment.
Dear friends,

Rufus FantailThanks for your kind efforts in 2020.

For me, 2020 proves that our “duty of care” for each other is a basic requirement of a civil society. That means we are looking out for each other and for those we may never meet. Caring for each other means a responsibility to the environment we all live in. I know the rich and famous may live in the environment of Monaco or somewhere, but they are on the same planet, in real terms.

I really believe there is a future in a more wholesome embrace of caring for nature and the environment, in the times ahead. So let’s make it one of our goals for  2021.

While economic growth is the driver for most governments, we have to make sure we take that duty of care seriously enough to ensure we do not make this world any poorer for all of our children and the following generations.

This Christmas I will be reading “A Life on Our Planet” by Sir David Attenborough. The book is a positive projection of a way ahead for us. To be able to take this path, we have to free ourselves and trust that this planet is an integral part of our existence.

From all at B4C – have a happy Christmas and a new freedom in 2021.

Council off-road cycling strategy fails to protect greenspace values and natural areas bought with bushland levy
squirrel glider in Whites Hill Reserve

Our nature reserves need your support so that they remain protected for wildlife and for the community to enjoy now and into the future. You can have your say on the Draft Brisbane Off-Road Cycling Strategy until 28th February 2021.

More than 4300 hectares of land have been purchased and protected through Council’s Bushland Acquisition Program since 1990. The preservation and management of biodiversity within Brisbane’s natural areas is of vital importance.”

Brisbane City Council, 2020

Concerns about the draft strategy, include:

  • No proof of assessing increased environmental impacts of off-road cycling
  • No erosion assessment
  • No core habitat mapping
  • No impact assessment for increased noise and the physical risks of mixed use tracks
  • No reserves marked as prohibited
  • Fails to commit to eliminate illegal and damaging off-road track construction
  • Fails to provide increased enforcement for illegal uses
  • Fails to demonstrate that this strategy will protect the primary purpose of conservation reserves and other vital green space assets.
We are putting together our submission and are keen to hear about your concerns, questions and experiences regarding the protection of our reserves.

Water Stewardship at Ingham’s
saving water and wildlife

In 2018, Ingham’s Enterprises Pty Ltd reached out to and partnered with Bulimba Creek Catchment Coordinating Committee to assist in attaining International Water Stewardship accreditation for their site.

The outcome, so far, has been outstanding for the environment and community.

What was a series of degraded old piggery dams, bordering the Ingham’s processing facilities, was seen as an opportunity. They have been transformed into some major aquatic and floodplain improvements that are bringing the Doboy Wetlands back to life and saving huge amounts of water.

This innovative and eco-conscious organisation puts approximately 4 mega litres a week through their ponds.

Ingham's has gained an International Water Stewardship Standard and are a founding member and supporter of Water Stewardship in Brisbane’s industrial and environmental landscape.
