Finland’s Olkiluoto, the world’s first ever deep geological repository for spent fuel  

Onkalo is a game changer for the long-term sustainability of nuclear energy, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in Olkiluoto, Finland. This deep geological disposal facility is the world’s first ever for spent fuel, off the south-west coast of Finland, near one of the country’s NPPs.   The use of nuclear energy in support of climate change goals, nuclear verification and possibilities for cooperation in nuclear safety projects in the Arctic were the main topics of discussion this morning between Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and President Sauli Niinistö of Finland.

  IAEA Data Animation: Nuclear Power Plant Life Extensions Enable Clean Energy Transition
Nuclear supply chain illustration   Extending the life of existing nuclear reactors is a cost-effective approach to generaging low carbon electricity
The IAEA has launched a Nuclear Supply Chain Toolkit to support countries in coordinating among regulators, technical support organizations, owner/operators of nuclear facilities and their suppliers.    A new IAEA data animation shows that extending the life of existing nuclear power plants significantly increases the availability of reliable low carbon power, helping to meet climate goals and the transition to clean energy by 2050.
     
IAEA Advances Project to Address Challenges Facing Global Nuclear Decommissioning Efforts   New IAEA Publication Highlights the Role of Management in Nuclear Power Plant Projects
 
IAEA efforts to improve understanding related to the decommissioning of nuclear facilities took a step forward last week as experts from around the world gathered to provide feedback for an Agency initiative to catalogue and analyse the status of and major challenges faced by decommissioning programmes worldwide.   Management of Nuclear Power Plant Projects, funded through the IAEA Peaceful Uses Initiative, describes how to implement a management framework within a nuclear power plant project. ensuring that required systems are in place to manage project areas and are updated proactively as the project progresses.
