Genomic Expression is launching saliva based COVID19 testing - deal with Yale licensed for saliva under their EUA.
We worked with saliva from the beginning of the pandemic because we recognized all the benefits download white paper on saliva .
How is saliva collection different than other collection methods?
Saliva as a sample specimen has many advantages. It's per definition done through self- collection, which means there is less risk to healthcare workers. It is also less invasive for the individual than a nasopharyngeal test which goes way back into the nasal cavity. Finally, as long as the saliva is analyzed using PCR in a high complexity lab, it performs just as well as the nasopharyngeal swab test which is the gold standard.
The work that Dr. Anne Wyllie, assistant professor at Yale Public Health Modeling Unit has done is quite amazing;
Dr. Anne Wyllie and her team has proven that saliva is just as good a sample type as the Nasopharyngeal Swab: This groundbreaking research is published "Saliva is more sensitive for SARS-CoV-2 detection in COVID-19 patients than nasopharyngeal swabs" https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.04.16.20067835v1. Saliva is less expensive to collect because its is by definition self collected and that reduces the risk for the healthcare worker that collects the NP swab as well as the cost for PPE.
