Council and staff of the Advisory Council on the Status of Women extend sincere and heartfelt appreciation to everyone who participated in the 2020 Montreal Massacre Memorial video commemoration. We missed being together physically but were pleased with how many people joined by Zoom and have watched the video (vimeo.com/peiacsw). Special appreciation to all who contributed their stories, their voices, and their hearts to making this year's memorial meaningful.
We remember the 14 women who died in Montreal and the 10 women who have been killed in PEI since 1989. We remember the thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls across Canada. We remember and honour all who suffer gender-based sexual violence. We honour the courage and resilience of survivors everywhere and commit to helping them thrive.

3) COVID-19 Post Circuit Breaker Holiday Measures
|
|
Through the holiday season, beginning Friday, 18 December 2020 at 8 am, post circuit breaker measures are in place; these measures are expected to be in place until January 11th, 2021.

Have you… Been renovicted only to find your apartment listed for higher rent or on AirBnB? Struggled to afford rent on top of other living necessities? Lived in substandard conditions risking your physical or mental health? Experienced housing discrimination based on age, race, disability, family status (such as having kids), gender expression/identity, or source of income? Struggled to find a place to live within your budget?
When we share our stories we feel less alone. By sharing our stories, we can keep the conversation going about the need for safe, affordable and stable housing on PEI. We can encourage our elected officials to take our housing crisis seriously by showing them the very real and direct impact that their lack of action has had on people in the community.
Here’s how we can make that happen:

👉Use hashtags #IslandRight2Housing #PEIHousingCrisis

6) Islanders’ Opinions Wanted on Animal Welfare

An online survey launched today is asking Islanders to have their say about animal welfare and animal protection laws on Prince Edward Island.
The Animal Welfare in PEI survey asks Islanders to share their views with the provincial government. Surveys take between 10 and 15 minutes to complete.
Agriculture and Land Minister Bloyce Thompson said animal welfare is an important issue for many Islanders.
“Whether we are talking about the companion animals in our homes or animals being raised on Island farms, our goal is to see all animals well cared for, throughout their lives,” said the minister.
“This survey will help us identify the concerns of the Island public when it comes to animal welfare. Your responses will help the Department to identify any gaps in animal welfare laws and policies in PEI.”
The survey will close on February 15, 2021.

Have YOUR say about animal welfare laws and protection in PEI. Totally anonymous (if you wish) … or you have the option to add your contact info.
A few points of possible interest BEFORE completing the survey:
1) very near the end, there is a problem with the question … “who should be responsible for animal welfare” … in that the options do not include “other”. This might have been an inadvertent error of omission, BUT it is also a tactic often used by governments to support what that government has already decided (for example, so that they can state >> 80% of respondents stated that organization “x” should have responsibility for…). On the positive side and as an alternative, there is a “comment” block just below that particular question in which you may use to offer an alternative.
2) Throughout the survey, there is no acknowledgment of the EIGHTEEN (18) animal rescue groups that exist within PEI. The only one that is highlighted is the Humane Society.
3) PEI Wildlife Legislation does not allow for “rescue / rehabilitation” of wildlife -- >> similar to “Hope for Wildlife” in Nova Scotia and similar to what exists in other Canadian jurisdictions. Yet…PEI legislation DOES allow for “farming” of select wildlife. The message? …profit is ok but not rescue??
Completing this survey is particularly important for CKC members. It offers the opportunity to highlight and to give credence to responsible, licensed breeders and – by extension – has the potential to impact, reduce and perhaps eliminate “puppy mills” and ill-fated “backyard breeding”.

8) PEIRSAC Looking for Community Members to join Board of Directors
|
|
The PEI Rape and Sexual Assault Centre (PEIRSAC) is searching for community members from all across PEI to join our volunteer Board of Directors. Our mission is to support survivors of sexual assault and abuse in their healing and to ensure that all people living in PEI are safe from sexual violence. In achieving this mission we work collaboratively with, and in ways that empower, individuals and organizations. In particular we are seeking out expertise in accounting and non-profit finances, human resources, health care and the legal system as it pertains to sexualized violence. 9) SAY -The Animated Video!
|
|
Advance Care Planning can be an emotional subject. Oftentimes it is not explored early enough in life, leading to anxiety or regret in the event of a sudden health incident. With the Life Milestones campaign, Advance Care Planning in Canada showcases the importance of proactive planning.
The goal of the animated video was to "highlight the importance of having these conversations and show that it doesn’t have to be seen as something that is difficult or overwhelming to talk about thanks to ACP’s streamlined and accessible approach" says Brendan Huza, producer of the video.
The animated video was produced by freelance animation director, Brendan Huza, based in Burbank, California. Brendan has had the honour of creating animated music videos for Aretha Franklin, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, Alanis Morissette, Leon Russell, Sly and the Family Stone - and most importantly, Tara Shannon!

10) Famous Five Book Sales Support PEI Women’s Institute Scholarships

The PEI Women’s Institute is setting up two new scholarships with proceeds of the sale of books that celebrate Prince Edward Island’s Famous Five and the contributions of these exceptional women leaders.
“The response to the book ‘In their Own Words: Prince Edward Island’s Famous Five’ has been incredible and we have had a lot of interest in the stories and lives of these amazing women. By donating 250 copies to the Women’s Institute, sales proceeds will support scholarships in honour of these trailblazers and support future women leaders.”
- Minister Responsible for the Status of Women Natalie Jameson.
With the proceeds of the sales, the PEI Women’s Institute will develop two scholarships in honour of Prince Edward Island’s Famous 5, supporting women in agriculture and health care.
“These scholarships will highlight both the Women’s Institute’s roots in agriculture, and the leadership and team effort displayed in health care during COVID-19 in Prince Edward Island,” said Ellen MacPhail, executive director of the PEI Women’s Institute.
Books are $20 and available through the PEI Women's Institute Office by calling 902-368-4860 or emailing wi@gov.pe.ca (link sends e-mail). Appointments and masks are required for pick-up or a mail out option is also available. Office hours are 8 am – 4 pm, Monday to Friday.
Published by the Interministerial Women’s Secretariat, the 225-page book tells the story of how five women from different backgrounds and political stripes made history, holding five of the most influential positions of government in the province in 1993. At that time, PEI’s Famous Five held the following positions:
- Hon. Marion L. Reid, Lieutenant Governor;
- Hon. Catherine Callbeck, Premier;
- Hon. Nancy Guptill, Speaker of the House;
- Hon. Elizabeth Hubley, Deputy Speaker; and
- Hon. Pat Mella, Leader of the Official Opposition.
It is the first, and only, time in Canadian history that five women held these positions at the same time.
The 25th anniversary of the PEI's Famous Five was in 2018 and research for the book started that year.

13) Blooming House Fall Recap
|
|
Happy December! It's hard to believe this crazy year is on its way out!
Although a challenging year in many ways, we have had a truly wonderful year at Blooming House. To date, we have seen over 110 women through our doors. While it’s a heartbreaking reality that this many women have needed to access emergency shelter, we are so honored to have been here for them.
As we approach our second birthday in January, we have much to celebrate and be thankful for! This past July, we hired our Executive Director, Tammy Denning and in October, we added a Resource Coordinator position! The Resource Coordinator position allows us to be able to provide additional support to our guests and help them navigate the many programs and services that are available for them through government and other organizations. These two positions are game-changers for our organization as they allow us to not only provide much needed shelter, but also walk alongside our guests to help them in real, tangible ways.
Covid-19 has changed many things this year but it certainly didn’t change people's generosity. We are always so grateful and encouraged by people's willingness to be a part of our work. This year we have set up a monthly donor program, have had our storage room filled with gently used seasonal clothing, winter jackets and when a little Facebook post was put up asking for some donations for women moving into their own space, the community (YOU!) blew us away.
