Sign up for the next Jazz Connector - Developing a Music Career Strategy for 2021 with Jazzfuel's Matt Fripp

Continuing our Jazz Connector online meet-ups with a focus on career development, IMC would like to invite the Irish music community to come together for an interactive presentation, Q&A session and chat on Thursday January 7th from 1:30 - 3:00PM.

The topic at hand is:

Developing a Music Career Strategy for 2021 with Jazzfuel's Matt Fripp

We’ll be joined by musician, agent & manager Matt Fripp. After graduating with a jazz degree from the Guildhall School of Music, Matt started working as a booking agent and manager, first during 6 years at a London-based agency and then with his own company, booking more than 2,000 international gigs to date.

Alongside his booking and management work, he runs the website Jazzfuel which works with musicians around the world on areas such as releasing albums, getting gigs and growing an audience. You can find out more about this work via the free articles, guides and interviews at Jazzfuel.com.

With 2021 still uncertain in terms of touring and gigging, we’ll look at some of the areas that are within your control when it comes to building your career and growing your fanbase. We’ll talk about:

Release Strategy

  • The value of singles and pre-orders
  • DIY press outreach
  • How to make progress with playlisting on Spotify
Digital Fan-building
  • Mailing lists: how & why these are important for fan-connections
  • Facebook: how & why you need to be producing engaging content
  • Website: your online ‘hub’ and what it should include
Creating Engaging Video Content
  • How to set up premieres of pre-recorded videos
  • Tips for live-streaming content

PLEASE REGISTER YOUR INTEREST below to attend. You can also let us know if there are any particular topics that you would like us to cover in this or future discussions. If you missed out on the last meeting, you can read all of the talking points that were discussed here.

Look back at The Do's and Don’ts of Funding Applications with Kim Macari - How to implement best practices when applying for funding from state bodies and other sources

Jazz Connector 10th December 2020: Do's and Don'ts of Funding Applications

At Jazz Connector on 10th December 2020, members of Ireland’s jazz and improvised music scene gathered together for a professional development session on:
The Do's and Don’ts of Funding Applications with Kim Macari - How to implement best practices when applying for funding from state bodies and other sources

Our Guest Speaker was Kim Macari, a musician, composer, and teacher who is also a programmer at Vortex Jazz Club, Chairperson of Jazz Promotion Network, and works with Arts Council England.

On funding decisions, she provides contextual information for jazz and improvised music applications, and sits on panels for all artforms. You can find slides and talking points from the session at the link below.

Watch the session and read supporting materials here
While we intend to record and publish more Jazz Connector sessions in the future, it's important to us that we include as many people as possible going forward. We know many musicians are busy at the times we've been holding these sessions wether it's teaching, going on the school run or the thousand other things that take up our time during the week. If you'd like us to hold these meetings at a different day or time that suits you then please take this short survey to let us know!
Let us know when the ideal time to attend is, and how we can keep you interested and engaged.

COMMUNITY
The results of IMC's Musicians Survey 2020 are here!

In early 2020, IMC conducted a survey amongst Irish jazz musicians, and gathered valuable information from the respondents on income streams, payment models, and different career structures, amongst other things.

The goals of IMC’s Musicians Survey was to assess the current state of the jazz and improvising musician community in Ireland, with respect to how and when they make music, how they make a living and the absences in infrastructure to support musicians. We hoped to evaluate how the jazz musician community is integrated into the wider arts scene, and where more engagement could be helpful.

We also aimed to assess IMC’s effectiveness in assisting musicians - how effective our communications with musicians are, and where our help is most needed.

Sincere thanks to each and every musician who took the time to fill out this extensive survey, which will be invaluable in helping us to reach our goals & better support the Irish jazz community in the coming years. We invite you to take a few minutes to read the illuminating results below.
