GTA can become Smart Cities leader: Siemiatycki
UTTRI associated faculty Professor Matti Siemiatycki comments in “Smart cities will be cleaner, accessible, even more democratic, proponents say. But governments adopting new tech must contend with risks, too,” published in the Toronto Star, January 4, 2020.
Siemiatycki says that the GTA "can become a leader in how cities leverage data and technology to support broad social goals, like sustainability and inclusion, while making municipal operations far more efficient and responsive."

In her presentation “The Paradox of Net-Zero: Cities, Transportation & Health,” Hatzopoulou confronts the challenges of climate change on transportation. The webinar was presented December 2, 2020 as part of the U of T Engineering Skule Lunch & Learn Seminar Series.

COVID-19 changed travel behaviour in the GTHA: Habib
In May 2020, UTTRI associated faculty Professor Khandker Nurul Habib initiated five new research projects to explore the the impacts of COVID-19 on the travel demand and travel behaviour of residents of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).
He speaks about this research in the article “Travel-related COVID spread in Ontario may be worse than we realize” published by TVO, December 23, 2020, which discusses the possible spread of COVID-19 through travel from places of lockdown – like the GTA – to neighbouring areas where shopping malls are open to in-person traffic.

Siemiatycki on public transit’s importance
UTTRI associated faculty Professor Matti Siemiatycki underscores the importance of Canada’s public transit networks in “‘Build it and they will come’: Canada’s public transit looks to rebound from COVID-19,” Toronto Star, December 16, 2020.
“Even through the pandemic, transit played a critical role in our economies,“ he states. ”Transit was a lifeline service for people to reach their front-line place of employment.“
