December 2020

It’s Not Too Late to Get Mandarins
Thank you to Terry and her husband Frank for making our December mandarin fundraiser possible. So far, club members have sent 40 boxes of Penryn grown mandarins to friends and family around the country as well as giving 66 bags as gifts locally.
It is not too late, there are still plenty left. A seven pound bag of mandarins is $15 or packed in a mailing box for $18. Get your order in now before they disappear for this season. Please text Terry with your order 916-417-5741 right away.

Rhonda’s Decades of Community Service
Loomis Soroptimist club founding member and past-president, Rhonda Morillas, completed her term on the Loomis Town Council in December after serving more than two decades and many times as mayor. Her involvement in the community as well as the club is very much appreciated. She is a role model for empowering women who want to make their voices heard and represent the needs of their constituents. Our club couldn’t be more proud of your impact on our community through the years, Rhonda.

Clubs Donates Chairs to Koinonia
On Wednesday, December 16, Bev, Karen and Shari Lynn dropped off fun comfy chairs as a gift to the girls in the Loomis Koinonia Group homes. Thank you to the member who donated these chairs to the club. In addition, we gave each girl a holiday card with cocoa and a candy cane.
While the girls have been isolated because of the pandemic, they’ve been getting additional music and equine therapy to further their recovery. Since we can’t see the girls as often because of COVID, committee members Shari Lynn and Mechelle have been arranging for the club to send them cards, give them Dream it Be it inspirational bracelets and keep in contact with staff. This summer, Mechelle also led the girls and club members in yoga classes in the park where we could socially distance.
Our club usually delivers the Soroptimist Dream it, Be it career exploration to the girls each year. In addition, we’ve funded club member, Mechelle, in providing a multiple session course on self-esteem, health, fitness, mindfulness and other habits that contribute to well-being. We look forward to doing these again when the pandemic is over.

Club Prepares Holiday Meal for Seniors
Each year, our club traditionally cooks the Christmas meal for those attending the Senior LIFE Center in Loomis. Despite COVID, we found a way to maintain the tradition. Thanks to Jenny and Peggy for organizing the meal with help on the hams behind the scenes from Chris!  We so appreciate everyone who helped in the kitchen, with delivery and/or with clean up:  Sheila, Becky & son, Dottie, Marilyn, Eileen, Rae & Karen.
This year we also provided an insulated bag as a gift to the seniors who can use it to pick up their meals. We appreciate Nancy and Jenny working together to get these bags with the Soroptimist logo in time. Shari Lynn also prepared holiday cards with cocoa and a candy cane to include with the bag.

Club gives Gifts to Inmates
To give encouragement to the women serving time in Folsom prison, our club has a tradition of providing each one with a small holiday gift. These have included school supplies and positive messages. Although we weren’t able to give these out personally this year, Bev and Shari Lynn delivered cards, with inspirational bracelets, candy canes and cocoa.

Club Received Many Award Applications
We are thrilled that we’ve had so many applications for our club grants and awards, especially with students attending school remotely. In the New Year, the Awards Committee – Alaire, Cyndie, Karin and Sharon will oversee the selection process and plan how we’ll recognize the recipients, considering pandemic restrictions.
The majority of our club fundraising goes toward these awards. By giving these grants, our club shows women in the community that we believe in them and their potential to educate themselves, achieve economic empowerment and make significant contributions to the world. The Soroptimist Live Your Dream Award provides financial support for a single mother who is pursuing her dreams through education despite the obstacles she faces. We are so appreciative of those who took the time to apply.
