First technology roadmap 

The development of technology roadmaps is an important first step to deliver on the 7 National Civil Space Priority Areas. The Australian Civil Space Strategy, Advancing Space identifies these Priority Areas which will deliver the greatest opportunity for the Australian space sector.

The first roadmap, Communications Technologies and Services provides strategic direction to capture opportunities to grow the industry. This will assist other areas of the economy including agriculture, remote medicine and resources, and contribute to securing the future of Australia’s space sector over the next 10 years.  

Thank you to all who have contributed to the development of this roadmap, including industry, researchers, Australian Government agencies with validation by peer space agencies and stakeholder organisations.

State of Space Report 

The 2020 State of Space Report documents the Australian Government’s civil space responsibilities and activities from 1 July 2019 – 30 June 2020. The Australian Space Agency entered into the second phase of the Australian Civil Space Strategy 2019-2020:
  • moving from establishment to fully operational 
  • headquartered at the Lot Fourteen innovation precinct in Adelaide
  • opening doors internationally that have brought new opportunities to the Australian space sector.

Hayabusa2 Mission Patch



Our Hayabusa2 mission patch is available to purchase! The patch is a special memento of this landmark space event, which saw Australia support JAXA to successfully complete its asteroid sampling mission. Purchase the patch from the Questacon Online Shop.

A roo named Purra in space

Australia was part of something special when the NASA and SpaceX Crew-1 mission launched last month. A little roo named Purra was on board. This story from the Boorong People of Victoria, tells the tale of a kangaroo pursued by hunters Wanjel and Yuree. This constellation can also be seen within the Australian Space Agency's logo, and visualised across the stars in the southern hemisphere.
Watch as Purra and NASA Crew-1 member, Shannon Walker say hello to Australia on board the International Space Station.

SmartSat CRC
releases annual report

The SmartSat Annual Report 2019-2020 is now available. This inaugural report maps out the groundwork undertaken in SmartSat’s first year of operation to form an outstanding Co-operative Research Centre which focuses on delivering tangible industry benefits. Read the report. 

SouthPAN to position Australia and New Zealand into the future

Australia and New Zealand’s operational Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) has officially been named the Southern Positioning Augmentation Network, or SouthPAN.

SouthPAN will be the first SBAS in the Southern Hemisphere, led by Geoscience Australia and Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) under the Australia New Zealand Science, Research and Innovation Cooperation Agreement. Read more.

IAF calls for Young and Emerging Space Leaders


The International Astronautical Federation (IAF) has opened calls for its IAF Young Space Leaders Recognition Programme and IAF Emerging Space Leaders Grant Programme, both for students and young professionals. Both applications close in February.

Quest For Blue is the first in a series of Saber Astronautics 'Quest' competitions to merge your entrepreneurial spirit with your passion for space. Saber wants to give you a chance to apply your skills as space engineers, uncover new and interesting problems, and learn to compare their value in a business sense.
