HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU ALL!

LION LESSONS

Lion ranges and populations are decreasing all across Africa due to reduction in habitat, indiscriminate snaring, professional hunting, poaching for body parts and human-lion conflict. Anna spent whole days at the Chipembele Conservation Centre with children from seven different schools, teaching them about the wonder of lions but also how conserve and live in harmony with them.

Dear <<First Name>>

As we approach the end of 2020 we feel a huge sense of gratitude for so many things. Despite the huge challenges we've faced as an organisation, as a community and as a country, Chipembele has made it through largely unscathed.

We are very grateful for a the low number of recorded COVID cases and deaths in Zambia, the flexibility of our staff, the extra time all the restrictions gave us to plan far ahead and create inspiring new education sessions, the upbeat energy of our students and for living among such a resilient community.

We are also enormously grateful for the extra COVID related support from sponsors, donors and friends, which helped us get through the year without standing down any staff or reducing any wages and which was hugely important to us as Directors and to our Board of Trustees.

Wishing you,
<<First Name>> and yours, the very best of health in 2021 and may it be a brighter and more prosperous year for everyone.

Anna and Steve Tolan

ELEPHANT CHARGE 2020 - A WIN!

Chipembele’s Education Manager, Corey Jeal (pictured far right bottom row) and Thandiwe Mweetwa, Project Manager-Luangwa at Zambian Carnivore Programme (pictured standing at right) joined the Eco-Charcoal team to compete in this year's ‘Elephant Charge’ off-roading charitable event outside of Lusaka.

The Fuchs Elephant Charge 2020 was held on 26 September. Twenty six teams raised (USD) $144,645 for conservation, shared among eleven conservation NGOs in Zambia, Chipembele being one of the fortunate recipients. A remarkable feat in a year of a global pandemic.

Team Eco-Charcoal not only managed to win the award for highest amount fundraised by a single team ($40k) but they also won the shortest net distance trophy.

A huge thank you to all those that donated and to the Elephant Charge organisers for such an incredible event.

MENTORS AT CHIPEMEBELE (MAC)
NETWORKING WORKSHOP

The Mentors at Chipembele (MAC) is a year-long youth development programme for eight exceptional school leavers who have been starred for support in their careers or further education in conservation.
We are very proud that Micara, Presence and Abraham, who all completed the MAC programme have started university and are all studying conservation related degrees. Shylet has been offered a place at college in January to study for a diploma in natural resource management.

From left to right, top to bottom: Micara, Presence, Corey (Conservation Education Manager), Abraham and Shylet. We wish them all the very best in the years ahead and feel sure they will all become some of Zambia's future conservation leaders!

Our Community Conservation Educators are also involved in the mentoring workshops for the MAC on ‘life after school’ which included tips and advice on successful networking, writing CVs and how to tailor your application to the job description in order to put your best foot forward.

Many thanks to the Livingstone Foundation for their
financial support of the programme.

ENERGY EFFICIENT STOVE DISTRIBUTION

Chipembele partnered with Greenway Appliances to distribute 930 energy efficient stoves to households without electricity in the local community who rely on firewood or charcoal for cooking.

We look forward to seeing positive outcomes from this initiative, as pressure on our local forests is reduced.

Many thanks to Greenway Appliances for making
this impactful initiative possible.

RADIO PRESENTATION TRAINING

Above, Thandiwe Mweetwa, Project Manager-Luangwa at Zambian Carnivore Programme presenting at the radio training.

The COVID restrictions encouraged us to think more creatively about the delivery of our programmes. One of the initiatives was particularly successful - Conservation Hour on the local radio. We partnered with Conservation South Luangwa and the Zambia Carnivore Programme to broadcast weekly conservation sessions on important issues and with representatives from each organisation engaging in live phone-ins.

Recently we we invested in some radio presentation training, to support a more polished, professional production for our listeners. Conservation Hour has proved so popular we will be continuing it throughout 2021.

VISIT FROM NORTH LUANGWA CONSERVATION

We were thrilled to welcome a visit at the Chipembele Conservation Centre, from over 40 people from North Luangwa Conservation Project together with some of their partners. We are now making plans for further collaboration in conservation education in the future.

We were photobombed by Chipazuwa and Trooper, the baboons we once raised as orphaned babies. They are now free and living a wild life but love to engage in high jinx when the opportunity arises!

CONSERVATION CLUBS

Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.

William Butler Yeats

Students in the Conservation Clubs run by Corey, our Conservation Education Manager, eagerly use tablets for the first time. The tablets were kindy donated by Graeme Gisssing of Stop Poaching Now and are loaded with engaging African wildlife and conservation apps.

Mfuwe Secondary School Conservation Club students learn about protected area mangement and design.

Primary school students engage in a fun activity about adaptation and evolution. These lessons not only introduced the concepts of adaption and evolution but looked at what adaptations have evolved in the wildlife we see here, e.g. the giraffe's long neck, bird migrations, etc.

With the rains quickly approaching and all the time lost to COVID our conservation education manager Corey has been working hard to try and get as many pupils into beautiful South Luangwa National Park as possible.

Our field trips give students the connection to our conservation lessons and foster a love for wildlife. They also remain a firm favourite activity with our Conservation Club members!

ANIMAL RESCUE

Over the last few months Anna and Steve have taken in a number of orphaned animals that have really kept them on their toes. Currently under rehabilitation at the Chipembele Centre are 3 baby genets, 4 baby monkeys, two bush piglets and a juvenile monkey, named Nutmeg, who was struck by a car and suffered a serious head injury.  There always seems to be someone who needs feeding with a bottle of milk or a dish of fruit and vegetables!

In addition there are 2 baby baboons who are 9 and 10 months old, recently weaned but still being fed fruit and vegetables while they slowly adjust to outside life and join the local troop.

Twiggy a Vervet Monkey, came into care at 1 or 2 weeks old.

Marcy looks after an even younger baby, Pepper, and carries him everywhere.

Three baby genets in care.

Last but not least... Meet Bristle and Brush, brother and sister orphaned baby bush-pigs, aged about 2 weeks old. The latest young in care. They were found by some children in a muddy river bed after a heavy storm in a remote rural area. They then rescued them and took them to our Community Conservation Educator, Daniel Zulu who immediately contacted Steve and Anna at the Chipembele Conservation Centre. The piglets arrived a week ago and are in great condition. We were so relieved they didn't end up in the pot and are very proud of the children for their kind actions. A tangible example that our programmes work!

Many thanks to the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) for their authorisation and support of our rehabilitation work.
