It has been quite a year! Although our team has been working remotely since early March, it has not hindered our research progress and drive to make a difference in the lives of all children and their families with allergic conditions. We have been hard at work submitting grant applications, hosting webinars and virtual learning sessions, writing manuscripts on our work, and meeting virtually via Zoom as often as we can to stay connected with one another during these unprecedented times. Take a look at CFAAR's major accomplishments in 2020:
- Expanded into a Center and solidified a team of more than 30 researchers spanning from faculty, junior faculty, epidemiologists, post-doctoral students, residents, program coordinators, and research assistants.
- Significantly built out our three primary cores of public health data, clinical research, and community & school outreach
- Actively worked on close to 20 research studies in these areas including:
- FORWARD R01: Multi-site study aimed to understand differences in food allergy development among White, Black, and Latinx families.
- SEED: Clinical trial aimed to explore early infant introduction of peanut and other common food allergens in the US and the impact of early introduction on food allergy development between ages one to three.
- IREACH U01: Clinical trial aimed to improve pediatric adherence to guidelines surrounding early peanut introduction and decrease incidence of peanut allergy in infants.
- FARE Data Commons: Collaboration with FARE to create Food Allergy "Data Commons" that will allow researchers worldwide to share and analyze data on one platform and answer critical questions surrounding FA development, prevention, treatments, and more.
- Presented our research findings locally, nationally, and internationally (virtually) 🙂
- Published close to 40 peer-reviewed manuscripts in allergy and asthma journals since 2019. See below for some of our latest publications!
- Created Community Advisory Board and Scientific Advisory Boards: We have brought together Food Allergy and Asthma stakeholders who share lived experience and will assist with goal setting and new research directions.
- Hosted CPS/NU Student Health Leaders Program for 100 CPS High School Students interested in public health and medicine
- Hosted Summer Scholars Program for 13 high school and undergraduates to assist with our ongoing research projects
- COVID-19 and Anti-Racism Initiatives: Partnered with Northwestern's Center for Community Health to create two recovery and response initiatives to assist families, businesses, organizations, and advocacy groups who have been adversely impacted by both the pandemic and social injustice across the nation.
- Connected with the National Institutes of Health, Chicago Public Schools, and foundations to collaborate on COVID-19 Research Initiatives
- Spearheaded mental health initiatives to support essential workers and families cope through this year of uncertainty. See below for some resources as we head into the holiday season.
We are excited to hear your thoughts and hope to find additional ways to collaborate and support each other in 2021.
We are so grateful for all your support and wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season!
