MPP Report ~ December 2020

During the past few weeks I have been meeting with people throughout Kanata and West Carleton. This newsletter provides information on my activities.

I hope everyone can find the time through the holiday to pause and reflect on our blessings. The year 2020 has been an extraordinary one, filled with unexpected news and events. I consider myself very fortunate to be part of such a caring and generous community, especially in these challenging times. I am honoured to serve the residents.

In thinking of the holidays, I want to share a thought from my 2020 Holiday Wish:

Though this time of year is centered in traditions, sometimes life changes and the traditions we have need to be adapted. This year we must remember and honour our old traditions while we start new ones that accommodate – and embrace our new realities. My hope for residents of Kanata and West Carleton is that you will make the most of the break and be recharged and refreshed with your memories and the new memories you will make with loved ones this year.

My 2020 Holiday Message
~ the best of the season!

I recently visited our local food banks, the West Carleton Food Access Centre (above) and the Kanata Food Cupboard (below) to thank the volunteers for their service.

There are many households in our community who need support. A study by the Canadian Food Centres Canada found that 1 in 7 Canadians are experiencing food insecurities. Through the holidays and into January, please consider donating to our local food banks.

INFORMATION ON HOW AND WHERE TO DONATE

(Photo Above) The Ottawa Hospital recently delivered the first COVID-19 vaccination in Ottawa. Jo-Anne Miner, Personal Support Worker at St. Patrick’s Home, was the first to receive the vaccine! Jo-Anne commented: “This will help create a safe space for me, my colleagues, and the residents.”

(Photo Below) The Premier announced that the Province has developed a plan to receive, store and administer COVID-19 vaccines to Ontarians. As soon as more vaccines arrive in Ontario, they will be distributed. The vaccine will be made available first for the Province’s most vulnerable and to health care workers.

The Diefenbunker Museum will be investing $1.5 million in the renovation and revitalization of its facilities. The Ontario Government is pleased to contribute $492,410 towards the museum projects. This upgrading at the museum has the potential to increase attendance by up to 20 percent and boost local business activity by up to 10 percent. Great news for Carp and West Carleton!

A few weeks ago it was a pleasure to join a virtual meeting to celebrate the launch of the fall edition of the Ottawa Board of Trade’s CAPITAL Magazine. This edition focuses on recovery, collaboration, and leadership in Ottawa -- which are all key elements to our community’s success moving forward. I was pleased to provide comments for the feature article and to appear with community leaders on the cover of the magazine.

Thank you to the Ottawa Board of Trade for your energy and commitment in working with Ottawa’s businesses.

Carp BIA President Jennifer Stewart and I recently met to discuss recent news on local businesses and the Light up the Village initiative (photos above and below). Thank you Jennifer for the talk about the local business scene and the latest activities of the BIA.

Through the holiday season I am encouraging everyone to make a conscious effort to support our local business community. Buy from stores in your neighbourhood, from our local malls and plazas. Shopping at your local retail store provides employment for local people, carries the expenses of the store, and your money remains in the community.

INFORMATION FOR CONSUMERS WHO WANT TO "SHOP LOCAL"

You may have seen that I recently reported on activities through 2020 relating to Kanata-Carleton’s High Tech and Business Initiative. Last year, I set out to actively promote and support local business enterprises so that our community will continue to be prosperous. This initiative provides a framework for my collaborative efforts with local business leaders to profile and advance Kanata and West Carleton business interests at Queen’s Park.

Through the holiday season please take special note of these important fire safety tips:
• Keep doors and windows free of snow and ice so they can be opened and teach children how to open them if needed;
• If you smoke inside, use extra precaution when disposing of smoking materials;
• If you are using a space heater, shut it off when you leave the house and make sure you keep all combustibles at least three feet away;
• Fireplaces are nice to keep the house warm, but make sure the chimney is clean and in good working order; and,
• Keep the furnace in good working condition; make sure the exhaust vent is clear of snow and ice.

Please follow these tips and stay safe!

As often as you can, get outdoors and enjoy our neighbourhood parks! Physical exercise is great for your health and frame of mind. When I can get time, I love taking my dogs Gracie and Tubby for walks, whether it is around Beaver Pond Trail or another of my favourite neighbourhood trails.
