Loreto Highlights Update - 18th December 2020
Our Christmas Prayer 2020
175th Anniversary
On Thursday 16th December 1845, five Loreto sisters arrived in Gibraltar. Having travelled for 8 days on a ship called The Royal Tar, they spent the night on board before being rowed ashore the next day. They were accompanied by the Vicar Apostolic of Gibraltar, the Right Reverend Henry Hughes.
The Loreto crest was projected on to the Moorish Castle on the 16th and 17th December to mark this historic event..

TV interviews
This week we hosted GBC TV and Grupo Área Comunicación who visited the school to interview staff and pupils for the 175th Anniversary of Loreto.
Faith Diary
Rejoice, O highly favoured one… The Lord is with you’ are the angel Gabriel’s words to Mary on imparting the overwhelming news that she was to become the Mother of God.  These words remind us that however difficult our personal circumstances may be, if we welcome the birth of Mary’s son and receive him into our hearts and lives, we too can rejoice in His presence always, not just at Christmas.  A very happy and Holy Christmas to you all !’
Gym Squad
Our Gym Squad bubble have been working hard on their individual skills and BAGA badges this term. They have also enjoyed using the apparatus such as the vaulting box.
This years Gym Squad captains have been announced, congratulations to Ana Sheriff and Talia Perez on their co-captaincy. These girls are our most experienced Gym Squad members and were the first to welcome a new member into the squad, Marie (Y5C)
Cynthia Bowers - R.I.P.
This week we lost one of our own.  A dedicated teacher at Loreto, Cynthia will be sadly missed by all the colleagues and pupils who had the pleasure of meeting her before she retired from the school.
Our condolences have been shared with Phillip Bowers, who has invited the school to celebrate Cynthia's life once Covid restrictions are lifted and family members may return to Gibraltar.
Parent's Weekly Focus - Social Media Guides
This week's online safety focus for parents is looking at a guide to stay safe over Christmas and making aware of the most common Social Media Apps. Take a look here to see what these Apps are.
Upcycling Wrapping Paper
Upcycled wrapping paper has been on sale from the LSSC group this week at 50p per roll of 5 sheets.  The children have stamped Christmas images on newspaper with proceeds towards Childline.
First School's Gold Book
These children have been awarded certificates and gold pencils in recognition of hard work and excellent effort.
Growing In The Garden
Our School Gardening club members have been preparing the garden for the festive holiday.  The children have thinned tomatoes and coriander which they have taken home to grow over the school break.  The garden beds have also been planted with broccoli, carrots, radish, sprouts and cauliflower which we hope to harvest around February midterm.

The Art Scene
Year 1 commemorate the 175 years of nuns on the rock by producing some fantastic pictures in their lesson.  The pupils have had a lovely last week of term, full of surprises and sparkles: The class elves' have given each child a surprise 'kindness' task to carry out.
We have made a calendar to mark the 175th anniversary of Loreto nuns on the Rock. We have added sparkle to the classroom with beautifully coloured baubles, and we have completed our Advent Wreaths.
Year 5 have been looking at Romero Britto, a painter, printmaker and sculptor, whose work is influenced by pop art and cubism. His work often includes bold patterns, bright colours, playful themes and hard-edged compositions. Year 5 designed their own calendars in the style of Romero Britto.
