Fish Welfare Initiative December Updates

Hello,

W
e have exciting news to share as we approach the end of 2020, including two extremely important ways you can help us help fish: recommending candidates for our open positions in India, and donating to support our work.

But first, some updates on our research:

At FWI, we're committed to improving the lives of as many fish as possible, regardless of where they may be. That's why we recently published scoping reports on the first and thirteenth largest producers of farmed finfish: China and the Philippines. The reports examine current conditions in these countries and suggest ways forward.

We're planning to use the findings to enable future fish welfare work, whether by FWI or another organization, in these important countries. (Thank you Ethel Wagas and Isla Gibson for completing these projects!)

We are finishing the year with another member on our advisory board: Welcome Jayasimha Nuggehalli! Jayasimha is the co-founder of Global Food Partners and works closely with industry, farmers, ministries, and governments throughout Asia. He is amongst the most well-respected advocates for animals around the globe, and we are thrilled to have him on board.

We wish you happy and safe holidays from the entire FWI team.

Support Our Work

I’ll be honest with you: As a team, we don’t like asking people for money. With so much work to be done to reduce the suffering of all the fish, fundraising feels like a distraction, and we also know that most people don’t have much to spare. But at the end of the day, none of this is possible without donor support.

We’re looking to raise $180,000 to fill our 2021 fundraising gap. We believe that with this budget, we are likely to improve the lives of 500,000 fish next year, and millions in subsequent years (primarily in India, read more here).

If this seems like a worthy and cost-effective goal, we humbly ask that you consider donating.

Join Our Team in India

We are expanding our team in India! We are looking for a program coordinator and a fish welfare expert to support our local operations. If you live in India and meet the requirements, apply before January 1, 2021.

Not for you? Then help us find the right person and forward these positions to anyone who would be a good fit.

Fish Welfare Expert
Program Coordinator

Our Fish Welfare Specialist, Dr. Marco Cerqueira wrote a blog post on the emotional capabilities of fish. As the scientific community steps beyond the question of whether fish feel pain, researchers ask whether fish feel emotions. Marco discusses how fish are far more emotionally complex than we give them credit for.
