A toolkit has also been created for those who are working to get people active informally or formally. Please consider using the key messages within the pack to talk to your partners and communities about what is allowed, and encourage people to stay active in whatever way is right for them.
JU:MP Outdoors winter campaign

We will be launching our winter campaign ‘JU:MP Outdoors’ this Friday 18 December to promote positive experiences of families playing outdoors, whatever the weather! The campaign has been specially co-created with local families and features a range of outdoor visuals, including bus shelters and telephone kiosks, posters and flyers, showing that now more than ever #OutdoorPlayMatters - you may have seen them on the streets already. Over 50 local businesses and organisations in our pioneer neighbourhoods are also supporting the campaign, displaying posters and flyers in their windows and noticeboards, including local pharmacies, GP surgeries, supermarkets, takeaways, charity shops, and post offices.

How can you help?

From Friday 18 December, we need your help, as our true campaigners and local influencers, to support us in spreading our key message over winter that #OutdoorPlayMatters. Help us to galvanize the troops driving the campaign to support our families. The campaign pack PDF with full details is here and all word document content to cut and paste for your social media, website copy and text messaging can be found at www.activebradford.com/jump-outdoors-campaign/

We can't do this without you! For any further information contact Emma Wragg, Campaign Manager at emma@wearemagpie.com or tel 07793003174

JU:MP Leads programme update

11 young people aged between 16 - 25 have now been recruited to and have started on the 15-month long JU:MP Leads programme!

Kayleigh Hussain, JU:MP Leads co-ordinator lets us know what they've been up to:

In the first week, we looked at what makes a good leader and what does a good leader look like. The JU:MP Leads took part in a sports quiz where they learned about local people in Bradford and surrounding areas who have made it to a professional level and are now advocates and role models for their sport. We set the JU:MP Leads a homework task that week, they had to research how many sports there are in the world, what the top 10 sports are in the world and to then familiarise themselves with one of the top ten to share in the next session.

In the second week, the JU:MP Leads talked us through their chosen game, how to play and what the rules are. We then looked at how to make sports inclusive, accessible and equal for participants. We created some scenarios that the JU:MP Leads discussed and explored what they could do in that specific situation.

The programme has been set up to train a range of diverse young people from the JU:MP area to become leaders. It is hoped all will complete the programme in 15 months' time with a recognised qualification, knowledge and skills to be able to inspire and motivate children to be active, and positive life experiences working with the communities in which they live.

JU:MP Connector programme update

The JU:MP Connector programme will run in all 3 pioneer neighbourhoods, forging closer links with families, organisations and community groups in the area.

AllerGrange (Allerton and Lower Grange) neighbourhood

Lorrett and Rozina, JU:MP Connectors in AllerGrange have been busy over the last few weeks with:

Greenspace consultation - talking to families through Facebook and WhatsApp parent groups, and at the school gates (where possible). Held a meeting in Ladyhill park with key stakeholders, Councillors, Cafe West and families to strengthen the relationships between people who live and work in the area.

Schools and a pebble hunt - bringing singing, dancing, laughter and outdoor learning to schools with local group BHT Early Education and Training and introducing a pebble hunt activity to further encourage children to be outside and want to explore the local area.

Christmas activity - decorating Ladyhill park with painted Christmas pebbles and decorations that have been made by children at the Academy at St James' primary.

Planning - for the New Year there are plans to work further with schools and the JU:MP Community Dance Programme as well as expand the pebble hunt.

Keep up to date with the AllerGrange JU:MP Connectors by following them on Facebook or Twitter!

Toller (Scotchman Road) neighbourhood

Recruitment is underway to appoint a JU:MP Connector through Manningham Mills Sports Association. We hope to bring you an update on how the programme is taking shape in the area in the New Year.

Creating Active Schools

Our pioneer schools have continued to embrace the JU:MP programme, looking at how they use the Creating Active Schools framework to enhance physical activity across the whole school day.  They have adapted to new government guidance by providing more opportunities to be active outdoors, as well as considering new ways to sit less and move more indoors too.  Despite the operational challenges they now face daily due to COVID-19, they have begun to implement our active travel initiative (JU:MP to School) and will continue to build on this as the academic year progresses.

As we move into the Spring term our collective focus will be on using monitoring to influence all stakeholders in schools around their involvement in the provision of physical activity opportunities, as well as providing training for all schools on active outdoor learning opportunities e.g. forest school, physically active learning, and cross-curricular orienteering.

Greenspace developments

AllerGrange neighbourhood

Consultation activity is taking place for the Wetlands, Millennium Green and Pitty Beck. Phase 1 of the consultation involved working with Bradford Council and local families, focusing on Pitty Beck: improving access through entrances and signage, paths, circular walks, outdoor classroom, picnic area, meadow creation and a bridge.
The designs are now being looked at in Phase 2, with 70 people being involved so far, looking at how to encourage physical activity in the greenspace area.

For more information on the development get in touch with
the JU:MP Connectors, Lorrett or Rozina.

Scotchman Road Play Park

The Scotchman Road play park has seen major progress since work began on the development in September! It is hoped that the park will be ready for families in the Spring.
Winter activities

Working with Outdoor Adventures Team at Bradford Council, we will be looking to bring some family fun to local greenspaces Peel Park, Lister Park and Millennium Green with some winter activities from January! All will be in line with COVID-19 restrictions and will include both snow and no-snow activities, depending on the weather. There could be snowball rounders, snow mazes and sledge races to tempt people outside! More details will be shared soon.

West Yorkshire Police - Partnership Intelligence Portal

We know from conversations that safety and crime is often a barrier for families accessing physical activity.

The Partnership Intelligence Portal has been developed by the police to give groups and organisations across the district a way to submit intelligence to the heart of West Yorkshire Police through a web-based system.

For more information or to arrange for someone to come and talk with you about the system, contact

50 Things To Do Before You’re Five is an app and website full of ideas of low cost/ no cost activities for very young children, linked to language development, creativity, literacy and health and well being.

Visit Bradford Council's dedicated COVID-19 section of the website for support and advice.

It's been a strange year yet still, together, we have achieved so much.

Thank you to all partners and families who have worked hard to make everything in this update (and more!) happen in often very challenging circumstances.

Have a wonderful Festive Season and we look forward to working with you more in the new year!

Best wishes,

The JU:MP Team
