Executive Director's Corner

The year 2020 has been marked by grief and pain with more than 300,000 lives robbed by Covid-19 due to insidious politicization of human health and attack against science. The power of propaganda machine has invaded our daily lives with the digital communication revolution. More than ever, our lives are tribalized and siloed. After a year-long isolated life, the pandemic fatigue is widespread and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel seems unreal. Yet, holding up a defiant hope against hope reignites an alternative world possible. At ISAAC, we are grateful to be afforded wings to fly our dreams—PastoraLab for gender equal pulpits. More details will be on the way.
-Rev. Dr. Young Lee Hertig

A New Project: PastoraLab for Asian American Women Ministers
PastoraLab is ISAAC's newest program, in collaboration with the Center for Asian American Theology & Ministry at Fuller Theological Seminary. PastoraLab creates communal learning spaces for Asian American women ministers in the SoCal area to revitalize their callings and develop a Biblical hermeneutic that embraces their multiple identities. Post Election Reflections: Breaking the Silence
This past December 12th, we hosted a panel discussion with key Asian American pastors, activists, and scholars. We reflected on the general silence amongst Asian American Christians the last 4 years of the current administration & envisioned a way forward to the future. We are so grateful to all of you that joined us! If you would like us to generate more panel discussions like this, please let us know!

Episode 9 of the podcast, “When Women Preach..” is out! This episode is titled, “Ministry Outside the Church”.
"Full-time ministry" usually makes us picture pastors in a church -- but in reality, everyone is called to do full-time ministry. We speak with two women who minister full-time in the non-profit world -- Joanne Rodriguez, Executive Director of the Hispanic Theological Initiative at Princeton Seminary, and Breana Van Velzen, Community Minister at Duke University Chapel.

We express special thanks to Rev. Kevin Pranoto, ISAAC’s Board Vice Chair. As the new Executive Director of Mission Oak Cliff, Kevin has faithfully addressed the enormous needs of the communities in Dallas. Since Covid-19, his organization’s capacity hit the roof. The growing numbers of food and housing insecurity has lead the organization to expand their capacity to serve the increasing number of people in need. During this challenging period, Kevin requested to be on leave from ISAAC’s board so that he may focus on feeding of the hungry and expanding his organization’s capacity building. We will miss his presence, but we wish him success and expectantly wait for his return.
"As the new Executive Director of Mission Oak Cliff, I have worked hard to learn as much as I can about the community in which our clients live and work. We serve about 2,000 people per month through our food pantry alone, and over 200 people a month visit our Homeless Welcome Center. It has been a dream come true to be able to serve the Oak Cliff community in this way."

Introducing The ISAAC Team:
Miriam Cho, Multimedia Production
"I joined ISAAC because it was the first organization I knew about that addresses the unique challenges of Asian American and Latina women in ministry. Oftentimes, our experiences are lost in the broader mantra of having more women in ministry. Yet ISAAC creates a space for us to tell our stories of finding ways to minister in immigrant communities, despite the challenges we face. I've met many wonderful people through ISAAC that have constantly encouraged me in my calling and am glad to be part of the team!"
DJ Chuang, Tech Support
"When Dr. Hertig reached out to me to join ISAAC's team as tech support, I was honored! I've appreciated ISAAC's contribution to Asian American Christianity since its inception. I'm grateful for the opportunity to help further ISAAC's efforts."
Howard Kim, Communications
"When I heard of all the great things that ISAAC has been doing to support Asian American women in ministry, I had to be a part of it! As a Corean American male in ministry, one of my dreams is to help create more opportunities for Asian American & Latinx womxn in ministry, to be an empowering ally. Having grown up in a church where the ministerial gifts of womxn were not honored, I plan to right that wrong. I'm grateful to be on the ISAAC team & I'm excited for all that is to come!"
