December 18, 2020  EDITION
Meet a UB GME Wellbeing and Diversity Advocate

Chanel J. Fernandez, MD, Internal Medicine Physician Wellness Chief Resident (PGY-3)

“A huge thank you to the Internal Medicine and GME community for your generous donations this holiday season, in support of our Winter Coat drive. We are proud to announce that a total of over 400 winter coats along with numerous hats, mitts and scarves were collected. These will be distributed to select organizations, who will then provide them to those in need. Also, a grand total of $375 was raised from our online GoFundMe page that will be utilized to purchase additional winter items. Thank you UB for your generosity!”

Friluftsliv – Buffalo Style!

The Norwegian concept of “friluftsliv” is about embracing the outdoors in all weather – finding relaxation in the crisp air, enjoying the exhilaration of physical activity, smelling the forest on a winter hike, walking around your neighborhood taking time for yourself, or with others. This will be a regular Thrive! winter feature - sharing new ideas for Buffalo Friluftsliv throughout the winter season.
  • Celebrate the Winter Solstice on Monday, 12/21. It’s a special one this year! (read more in this WGRZ story) “The two largest planets in the solar system will look more like a single bright star in the southwestern sky after sunset on the solstice, an event known to astronomers as a great conjunction. The great conjunction will only be visible for an hour or so after sunset, so people will need to head outside at the first sign of nightfall on Dec. 21.”
  • An amazing outdoor winter dining opportunity is just steps away from the Jacobs School and the medical campus hospitals. Coco restaurant at 888 Main Street has set up a Crepe Chalet that has Paris Street Crepes, Baguettes, Desserts, Specialty Drinks, & Outdoor Heaters
           .

Invitation to join UB Winter Connections Mentoring Program through International Student Services

The office of International Student Services has just launched a winter break version of its regular International Student Mentoring Program (ISMP) that will span the length of the break until Feb 1. To connect as many students as possible over the winter break who may feel even more isolated under the current circumstances, the ISMP hopes that you will consider joining and pass the word on to colleagues and students.

The application deadline will be Sunday 12/20. Please fill out this form to be matched with a group in the program. If you have any questions about the program, please call 716-645-2258 or e-mail Caitlin Rioux at iss@buffalo.edu
