Week of December 18, 2020

Dear Political Science Students,

Congratulations on making it through the semester! I remember coming home from school in March thinking I would be back to classes in the fall, like normal. As a fellow student, I know how tiring it is to hear the words "unprecedented year", so I won't say it. All I will say is that we have all made it through another semester, an especially difficult one. The new year does provide hope, with continued news of vaccine distribution around the country. Next semester may be mostly remote again, but we are resilient, we know what it is like to learn in such an enviroment.

This is the last newsletter of the semester and of 2020. I hope everyone can relax this winter break. See you all in 2021!

Best,
Meghan

Wellman Hill Grant Reminders...
As you're preparing for the winter break, we want to remind you that applications for Wellman Hill Summer Internship Grants are due on February 12, 2021. You'll find detailed information and the online application on the program's website.

Wellman Hill Grants are made possible by a generous gift from Elizabeth Hill (B.A., M.A. 1997) to honor her grandfather, Wellman Hill. They are intended to encourage Political Science majors to pursue and accept public service internships. Please note that the program requires that students find their own internships, and some deadlines are fast approaching. The winter break is the perfect time to conduct an internship search.

For questions about the Wellman Hill program, please don't hesitate to contact Professor Posner.

Spring 2021 POSC Classes...
As we are approaching the end of the semester, we wanted to remind you of some of the wonderful classes our Political Science faculty are teaching next semester. Here are a few:

POSC 323: Judicial Politics
Professor Wager

Rejecting the view that judges mechanically apply the law, the study of judicial politics seeks to understand the behavior of judges as political actors with policy goals. Topics include judicial selection and socialization, judicial policy change, judicial strategy (especially the strategic interaction of judges on multi-judge panels), the interaction of courts in hierarchical judicial systems, the policy impact of judicial decisions, and the courts' interactions with coordinate branches of government (the executive, Congress, state governments, state courts). Primary focus will be on the federal judiciary, with some discussion of state judicial systems. Offered as POSC 323 and POSC 423.

POSC 357: Economic, Environmental, and Health Challenges: The Impact of Democracy
Professor McMann

To what extent does democracy result in positive economic, environmental, and health outcomes? Instructed by faculty from the disciplines of ecology, economics, epidemiology, medicine, and political science, students will learn about current economic, environmental, and public health problems and various democratic and non-democratic political institutions. They will read and discuss the latest findings about how democratic and non-democratic political institutions impact economic, environmental, and public health outcomes. Topics include economic inequality, economic growth, global warming, air pollution, infectious and chronic diseases, and worker health and safety. Building on this foundation of knowledge, students will work together to investigate the impact of political institutions on problems of their own choosing. Offered as POSC 357 and POSC 457.

POSC 389: Special Topics in American Politics and Policy - Race, Immigration And American
Professor Parris

POSC 391: Special Topics in Comparative Politics - Comparative Environmental Poli
Professor Hodgetts
