A NOTE FROM OUR DIRECTOR

Hello Neighbor,

It is our pleasure to provide you with actionable information that is useful to your property rehab.  As we enter the cold season, be mindful of your surroundings and report any suspicious behavior to your
local neighborhood police officers.  In addition, I encourage you to follow safe heating practices and ensure that your property is maintained. We look forward to walking through this rehab journey together. Thank you for improving Detroit.

-Antoine Glenn, Assistant Director of Compliance
TAKING CARE OF THE EXTERIOR OF YOUR PROPERTY

As soon as you close the sale of your house, you need to secure your property right away.

You can secure your property with strong locks and by boarding up windows, doors, and any other openings. These boards can stay up until you have completed your exterior requirements and you’re ready to close your case with the Compliance Team.

You will also want to start by clearing all the debris, trash, and overgrown vegetation from your yard. Complete this step as soon as possible to avoid violating the City of Detroit’s blight codes.

To remove debris from your property, you can choose to use a private company or use the Detroit Department of Public Works:
  1. Paid Pick-Up Bulk Collection Service
  2. Free Citizen Bulk Drop-Off Centers
  3. Emerging Industries Training Institute
Throughout your entire renovation, keep the exterior of your property looking nice and clean and make it a habit to cut the grass, shovel the snow, and manage overgrown vegetation.
1. Make frequent visits to property: Keep an eye on your property even if you are not going to work on it every day.

2. Secure all openings: This will prevent any damage to the interior caused by inclement weather, animals, or trespassers. How to Board a Window / Door

3. Avoid rodent infestation:  Prevention Checklist

4. Prevent frozen pipes: Tips to prevent freezing water damage

5. Watch out for illegal activity: If you suspect any illegal activity at your property, you can call the local law enforcement. The Improve Detroit app is another great public resource to report any issue in your neighborhood.

6. Remove snow: Snow or ice must be removed within twenty-four (24) hours after it has fallen or formed to avoid any code violation tickets (Municipal Code Sec. 8-15-103(c)). If possible, after removing your snow, please help your neighbors that may be unable to remove the snow.

*A note on Christmas Tree Disposal* 2020 Yard Waste collection has ended but real Christmas trees will be picked up from the curbside by your solid waste contractor during the weeks of January 4th-15th, 2021.
