CHANGES TO OPENING HOURS - COVID-19
(Repeat Article)

The NHS England Team in Cheshire & Mersey has written to all community pharmacies with clarity regarding the Section 5.1, pages 6-8 of the pharmacy SOP

They will be looking at the ongoing local situation and national guidance very carefully ensuring that all arrangements are reviewed as situations change and are seeking to take a very pragmatic view of how they work with contractors to manage and support.

They ask that you communicate with them any concerns with regard opening hours sooner rather than later so that they can work to plan services and ensure you are supported locally.

Should you have a requirement due to concerns over safety or efficacy of service delivery, at times of extreme pressure, require to implement the SOP allowance to work behind closed doors or to apply to amend your opening hours or even temporarily close, the following processes should be undertaken.

Please refer to the email (sent on 5 November) for full details.

CPCW NEWS

COVID 19 VACCINATION UPDATE

The LPC are mindful that the media is full of news about COVID-19 vaccinations and we wanted to assure you that Community Pharmacy Cheshire & Wirral is involved in discussions with all the local decision makers within Cheshire, Wirral and Warrington about the roll out of a vaccination programme in our footprint. These being NHS England Cheshire & Merseyside, the Integrated Care Systems in our area (ICS) and the Clinical Commissioning Groups. We are around the table, representing you, our contractors; we are also in close contact with our neighbouring LPCs in the North West.

Nationally you will have seen the roll out of the NHS Covid-19 vaccination programme being offered in some hospitals that started on the 8 December, with the vaccine being available more widely, and at other locations, as soon as possible.

This is the biggest vaccine mobilisation in history, and the situation is changing sometimes on a daily basis as new news and developments become known. To this end, we know you would like specifics yet right now we are not able to give you certainties as things change so very quickly. When we do have information we shall share this with you. Please also keep an eye on the PSNC COVID hub for national updates https://psnc.org.uk/the-healthcare-landscape/covid19/

In terms of patients, they too are asking for more information about the vaccine, mainly how do they get an appointment for a vaccination. We have been asked by the NHS to share this guidance with you, so that if asked you can advise your patients accordingly on the process. Patients are being asked not to contact the NHS until they get their letter.

“When it is the right time people will receive an invitation to come forward, for most people they will be advised by a letter, either from their GP or the national NHS. This letter will include all the information they will need to book an appointment, including their NHS number. They are being asked not to contact the NHS providers (Pharmacy/GP etc) to get an appointment until they receive their letter.”

Information on the vaccine is available on the NHS.UK website. https://www.nhs.uk/

Please be assured that we are representing you each and every step of the way.

CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR DIRECTED ROTAS
(Repeat Article)

NHS England North (Cheshire and Merseyside) have finalised their pharmacy rotas for the Christmas and New Year period.

Contractors are reminded that this year Boxing Day (26 December 2020) is a Saturday, a normal day for the purposes of community pharmacy opening hours. Therefore, pharmacies must open on the 26th for any core and supplementary hours. The substitute bank holiday for Boxing Day this year is Monday 28 December, when contractors do not have to open.

The rotas are also available to view/download from our website for reference (https://bit.ly/cpcwrota)

NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSE&I) has confirmed that there is currently no intention to issue a national or regional direction for community pharmacies to open on Bank Holidays over the coming Christmas and New Year period, as happened at Easter.

Update Your Directory of Services (DoS)

If you haven't already done so can you please ensure that your opening times are reflected correctly on your profiles through the Directory of Services (DoS) Profile Updater at https://dos-profile.service.nhs.uk/#/index and the NHS.uk webpage at https://www.nhs.uk/personalisation/login.aspx.

REPORTING MEDICINES SHORTAGES
(Standing Item)

Please continue to help PSNC help you and give them evidence to negotiate a decent concession price, report all medicine prices  that are invoiced at more than tariff.

Can all contractors please remember to continue report any new medicine shortages not listed on the SPS website using PSNCs online reporting form if you have not been able to source stock of a medicine from any supplier or manufacturer.

If a medicine is not affected by a shortage but is unavailable to purchase from your supplier(s) at or below the Drug Tariff listed price, please report the pricing issue to PSNC to consider a request for a price concession.
NEEDLE & SYRINGE PROGRAMME RESEARCH: RECRUITMENT
(Article from Robert Begg who is undertaking a Master in Public Health at the University of Liverpool)

My name is Rob and I currently work for Knowsley Council’s Public Health Department. Part-time I am also undertaking a Master in Public Health at the University of Liverpool, and for the final year I am completing a research dissertation in an area of particular interest, Needle and Syringe Programmes (NSP) in a pharmacy setting.

With permissions from the Local Pharmaceutical Committee and University of Liverpool I am aiming to recruit up to 10 members of staff from community pharmacy settings in Cheshire and Merseyside (excluding Knowsley) who would be interested in taking part a short one to one semi-structured interview to discuss their perceptions and experiences of NSP in community pharmacy. This piece of research will be available for all pharmacy staff, not exclusively for Pharmacists and participants from all roles within the pharmacy setting are encouraged to take part.

Interviews can be flexible to suit the need of the individual, the pharmacy and consider guidance regarding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore the interviews will be undertaken on Microsoft Teams, or another video conferencing platform that is suitable to the participant, at a time most convenient. The interview should last around 45 minutes, and for those with an interest in Pharmacies providing Public Health services, the conversations should be of particular interest.

This FLYER gives additional details, and includes my contact details for participants to get in touch. It would be greatly appreciated if you could share this email and the flyer with all members of staff and actively encourage them to take part in this important piece of research which will aim to improve understanding of NSP, and inform policy and commissioning intentions. I understand time is difficult at the moment with various competing priorities, but no more than one hour of staffs time at a time that best suits would be greatly appreciated.
