Do you know that feeling of melancholy when the end of the year approaches? You look back and think about everything you have done. Have you been able to be there for others and have you been able to make a difference? Returning questions, especially now that we are back in lockdown. Our thoughts go out to those who are unable to go home for Christmas or find themselves in precarious circumstances.

And yet, we hope this year we have enriched and empowered you with our programme on climate, equality and belonging. For now we share some reading and seeing stuff with you to break the holidays 😉: a blog from an international student about deeply missing a HOME, some nice longreads, the Feminist Reading List and interesting VPRO interviews on climate issues with Robin Wall Kimmener. We wish you all the best and beautiful thoughts to take to the New Year.
I would like to tell you a story
by Pompadó Z.R. Martha
We are very happy to introduce to you our new home blogger, third year student Theatre in Education and multi-talent Pompadó Z.R. Martha. Originally from Curaçao, Pom has been living in a lot of places which gives him a broad insight into the topics Diversity, Sporadic (De)Colonialism, and Inclusion. He will tell us a new story every two weeks. His first blog deals with multivocality, the concept of HOME and the challenge for the school to ensure that this does not remain a luxury or privilege for a few.
POLAR-IZE
an essay by Judith van der Elst
Judith van der Elst wrote this essay for us as a reaction to seeing the ARTE documentary, Jagd am Polarkreis that addresses the tension between traditional lands and modern politics, as a territorial dispute between Sami herders and the pleasure hunter, who both have rights based on being citizens of the modern nation state of Sweden. Van der Elst goes deeper into the symbiotic relationship between humans and reindeer, the reindeer being a vital part of this unique ecosystem. And asks how we can balance our quest for innovation and exploration with our desire to live sustainably on our home planet.
Please enjoy here In the Wind (2020). A work made on top of the collection of SMS which Sami reindeer herder Oula A. Valkeapää, has been sending home while wandering on windy fells of Lapland with reindeers. Wife at home, artist Leena Valkeapää, has received his messages while following the slow movements of the wind on the surface of the nearby lake, behind her window.
Reading List Feminism & Art
To educate ourselves we organize since 2018 together with Mister Motley a monthly Feminist Reading Group to help fight the undeniable under- and misrepresentation of women artists, WOC, non-binary and genderqueer artists. Based on this meetings we compiled a reading list that contains the best publications related to visual arts, performing arts and art theory. In both Dutch and English. And even better: you can find all these books in the ArtEZ Mediatheek. There is even a special Feminist Reading List Bookcase in the living room of the Mediatheek in Arnhem!

In 2019/2020 Krista Jantowski (WALTER books) curated a series of evening film screenings for us, accompanied by talks and interviews, entitled Precarious Nights. To continue the conversation, Krista has turned the Precarious Nights into Precarious Days.

In part 2 of Precarious Days, we revisit the second edition of Precarious Nights and republish Joram Kraaijeveld’s contribution on solidarity. In his speech, he focused on reinventing the concept of solidarity among cultural workers, which he put into practice during his work as director of Platform BK, an organization representing artists, designers, curators, critics, and other cultural producers and committed to better art policies such as Fair Pay. As you can imagine, they have a lot of things on their hands at the moment.

Please feel invited to contribute to this growing dossier! Krista is curious to hear your own experiences, thoughts and references and hopes that we can approach this as an opportunity to articulate our positions and forge links of solidarity. Please email her at hopethisfindsyouwell@walterinarnhem.nl.

Tegenlicht-uitzending: In De Ban Van Het Bos
