DECEMBER 2020
As my family sat down to dinner, my 12-year-old son posed a surprising question: “Do you wish COVID never happened?” I swiftly responded, “Of course! Look how many lives have been lost. How much we’ve missed out on. It has taken so much from so many.” He thoughtfully responded, “But if it had never happened, we wouldn’t have so much time together. You’d probably be on a business trip!” Of course, he’s right.
I’m not proud to admit that weeknight family dinners were not the norm pre-COVID. As much as this global pandemic has taken away from us, it has created space for us to think differently about so many fundamental parts of our lives – how we work, how our family units operate, how we spend our time, and where and how we want to live.

Since the arrival of COVID, I’ve been hearing myself repeat the refrain, “it can be both,” and it came to mind again that night. We can be both SO ready to shut the door on 2020, and also grateful for the space it’s given us to adjust what matters most. We can both mourn all that’s been lost, while still feeling hopeful about the progress we’ve begun to make during this strange and awful year. It CAN be both.

As we prepare to leave this dumpster fire of a year behind us, I hope you’ve all found some silver linings and life lessons that will make 2021 our best year yet.

Happy Holidays,
Ann & the Brilliant Ink Team
