e-News December 2020

From the Head of College

Our November e-news told of the exceptional achievements of our students this year – outstanding academic results in first semester, winning the High Table Cup, strong focus on community service, and more. All this news can be found here.

We have just received almost all of our academic results for second semester, and they too are outstanding. They are a great credit to our students.

With this wind in our sails, excellent recent training for many of our 2021 student leaders, and planning for next year well under way, we are looking to the new year with optimism – buoyed also by the strong support our students receive from alumni and friends of the College, to whom we are deeply grateful.

This support is reflected in this e-news in the remarkable bequest from the late Ivan Shearer, and has been evident throughout the year in so many generous donations for scholarships and student support.

As this strangest of years draws to a close, I hope that you too can look ahead with optimism and hope – and I hope to be able to welcome you to events at St Mark’s in 2021.

Warmest good wishes to you and your family, from all of us at St Mark’s, for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Professor Don Markwell
Head of College

Two books about the Newland family
have been published by Wakefield Press this year. One of our founders and the longest-serving chair of the College Council was Sir Henry Newland (1873-1969), for whom the Newland Building is named.

Mary Anne Fitzgerald’s A Most Surprising Man: The Life of Victor Marra Newland tells of the exciting adventures of one of Sir Henry’s brothers, Marra Newland (1876-1953), who fought in the Boer War, pioneered big game safaris in Kenya, and oversaw British military transport in East Africa in World War I – and much else.

The foreword is by Léonie Matheson, who is Marra Newland’s grand-daughter, and wife of Rod Matheson AM QC (Honorary Fellow and also a long-serving chair of College Council).

Marra: The making of men by Nicholas Newland is a study of five Newland brothers, including Sir Henry Newland and Victor Marra Newland – the fascinating story of a remarkable South Australian family.

The foreword is by Antony Simpson (Honorary Fellow) and Mary Lou Simpson – who live in the old Newland home, Undelcarra.
