Guidance and Advice for Students in light of COVID-19

From 1 January 2021, UKRI is making funding available to support the next generation of final year doctoral students who have found it most difficult to adapt and adjust their research project and training plan as a result of COVID-19. This new funding provided directly to Universities will help students on a needs based approach and will be targeted at those who have just entered their final funded year of research (those with a funding end date before or on 30 September 2021) who have not already received a UKRI funded extension.  Universities will have further flexibility in the provision of support for specific groups (e.g. disabled students, those who are neurodivergent or who have caring responsibilities).  The UKRI’s emphasis remains on adjusting research projects wherever possible, in order to mitigate for the challenging restrictions, and personal circumstances, resulting from the pandemic.

The decision making process for extension requests will rest with the respective HEI that has received the block grant award and students will need to follow host institutional application guidelines, when available.  The DTP will continue to have an oversight and work closely with DTP institutions concerning the new UKRI guidance.

Welsh Government and WCPP Internships

The DTP extends its congratulations to those students who recently achieved success in their application for an internship: Aimee Morse (Environmental Planning, University of Gloucestershire) and Findlay Smith (Politics and International Relations, Aberystwyth University) will undertake 3-month internships with the Wales Centre for Public Policy.  Ellen Bristow (Linguistics, Cardiff University), Ross Goldstone (Education, Cardiff University), Jodie Luker (Digital Economy and Society, Cardiff University), Amy Simpson (Education, Cardiff University), Monica Thomas (Criminology, Cardiff University) and Katherine Williams (Global Language Based Area Studies, Cardiff University) will commence 3-month internships with the Welsh Government.

National Centre for Research Methods

The NCRM hold a wide variety of training sessions.  NCRM organised events are charged at £30 per day for UK registered PhD students and are a good opportunity to learn something new or to improve existing skills.  Many of the workshops have now moved online and courses available may be found on the NCRM training database.

Wales DTP Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunities

The Wales DTP is offering six Postdoctoral Fellowships commencing in October 2021.  The Fellowships last one year (or part-time equivalent) and come with a salary.  They are open to applicants from across the UK who have completed a PhD within the last 12 months at an institution that is part of an ESRC DTP or CDT.  Applicants will need to identify a mentor who will be a senior colleague in the research organisation that hosts the fellowship.  The initial point of contact in identifying your mentor should be the convener for the pathway that best fits your proposal. For full information about the Fellowships and how to apply visit the Wales DTP website.

The closing date for applications is 23 March 2021, and applicants should contact pathway conveners by no later than 1 February.

Wales DTP Small Grants

Despite the current situation, there is still plenty of potential and support for the submission of applications for DTP small grant activities, and to plan collaborations that can be done virtually (webinars instead of conferences for example).  We welcome proposals for our next small grant applications call with a closing date of 26 February 2021.

Further information and an application form can be found on the DTP website.

Defence Research Network
