Dear Friend,

Throughout this incredibly challenging year, our Rise Up Leaders have continually inspired me and filled me with hope. Rise Up Leaders like Anuradha, who has protected her community from COVID-19 in India; Eyleen and Lucy, who continue to raise their voices for gender equity and girls’ rights in Guatemala and Kenya; and Nakita, who is standing for racial and reproductive justice in Louisiana.

As Nakita shared with us during Rise Up’s Annual Breakfast Gala, pictured below, she created GIRLS NOLA when she became a Rise Up Youth Champion in 2014. GIRLS NOLA is a mentorship and leadership program that enables Black girls in New Orleans to become leaders and achieve their goals. When the pandemic began, Nakita quickly adapted to launch a new virtual cohort of GIRLS NOLA leaders with ongoing support from Rise Up. As Nakita shared, she has always been a leader, Rise Up just gave her the tools and training to expand her impact.

“Rise Up is a special type of organization, one of a kind. An organization that took a chance on a young girl from the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana. They have invested in me, trained me, and poured into me over the years...And look at me today, I have blossomed into the woman that I’ve always aspired to be. Each day I wake up, I am inspiring young women in my community, while shaping and impacting the trajectory of their lives.”

There has never been a more important time to invest in leaders like Nakita who are rising up stronger to lead change, even in the face of crisis. And with the CARES Act encouraging more charitable giving in 2020, you can receive a bigger tax deduction for your gift. Will you join us in investing in visionary leaders here in the U.S. and around the globe by making a year-end gift to Rise Up?

Together, we can build a more just and equitable world.

Sincerely,

— Denise Raquel Dunning, PhD
