Our nation continues to reckon with contradictions within our democracy. On January 6, 2021, as our electoral process was being carried out, a riotous contingent attempted to thwart progress through emotional and physical harm. The events of the day were broadcast and witnessed by a horrified public as our elected public servants sought cover in and around the Capitol. Further, symbols that were carried or erected that day, such as the Confederate flag and the noose that was hung on the Washington Mall, only added to the ongoing tension and angst in our country over racial discrimination and violence. Many Americans felt afraid, but those fears were greater for our citizens of color.
We at the CEEDAR Center are disturbed by these events and take seriously our role in promoting democracy and equitable educational policy and practice for individuals who are minoritized on the basis of disability, race, and other identities. An equitable education is critical to fostering participation in our democracy and the pursuit of our nation’s highest ideals for each and every citizen. Thus, we remain steadfast in our commitment to equitable opportunities to learn, which includes a commitment to ensuring inclusive schools for students who are typically marginalized. Our mission is consistent with President Biden’s Executive Order on Advancing Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government.
We look forward to working alongside you in 2021 and beyond!
