We are delighted to announce that Pat Chessell will provide entertainment. But we want to hear from you too!

Fancy sharing a song, poem, or yarn with us on the night?  A couple of days prior to the event, we will connect with all who register to collect names.

WINTER SOLSTICE
STREAMED LIVE FROM NEWGRANGE
The Winter Solstice is an astronomical phenomenon that marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. In the Northern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice occurs on December 21 or 22, when the sun shines directly over the tropic of Capricorn.  At Sunrise on the shortest day of the year, for 17 minutes, direct sunlight can enter the Newgrange monument, not through the doorway, but through the specially contrived small opening above the entrance known as the ‘roof box’, to illuminate the Chamber.

While the OPW - Office of Public Works has announced that its annual Winter Solstice gathering at the Neolithic Passage Tomb of Newgrange on 21 December will not take place this year due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, the very happy news from OPW is that the Solstice Sunrise event will be live-streamed from within the Chamber on OPW Social Media channels for all to view.

Details to follow on OPW social channels click here.

Celebrate Safely:

  • Hold virtual gift unwrappings and celebrations.
  • Partake in virtual religious services.
  • Go for a walk with your household to see neighbourhood light displays.
  • Drive-in events and light displays are OK.
  • Santa can still visit.
  • Postpone in-person celebrations.
  • Reschedule staff holiday get-togethers.
  • Postpone all non-essential travel.
  • Postpone any out-of-province travel.
