Legal cigarette sales rose in Atlantic provinces during coronavirus bubble: study

An association representing Canadian convenience stores say the border closure between Quebec and New Brunswick may have helped choke off the illegal tobacco trade in Atlantic Canada. An Ernst & Young report [...] says the so-called Atlantic bubble erected to limit the spread of COVID-19 could explain why legal cigarette sales jumped in the region. “We’ve always known (illegal sales were) a big problem in Ontario and Quebec, but I think what this really showed was you had another factor for Atlantic Canada, which was, essentially, the closure of the border,” council president Anne Kothawala said in an interview Monday.

ETHRA EU Nicotine Users Survey

Major nicotine consumer survey ends on 31st December. Run by European Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (ETHRA) the survey asks questions about the use of different nicotine products in order to discern conditions for users across Europe. The practical consequences of possible regulatory changes are also examined. The survey is available in 16 languages, only takes 5 - 10 minutes to do, is limited to adults only and subscribes to GDPR protection. Study: Teen vaping levels off after surges; rates still high

Teen vaping rates did not increase from 2019 to early 2020 but remain high, with more than 39% of 12th-graders reporting past-year vaping of nicotine or marijuana. Data from the annual Monitoring the Future study on vaping and use of cigarettes, alcohol and drugs were released Tuesday. The study was conducted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research and funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

Experts List Benefits of e-Cigarettes

Health experts have highlighted the benefits of reducing tobacco smoking with the use of e-cigarettes. [...] Alan R Boobis of the Imperial College London, said the liquid in e‐cigarettes, propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerine(glycerol) was relatively non‐toxic at the levels present when inhaled over the short to medium term. He advocated the consumption of electronic cigarettes which was considered safer than the conventional cigarettes. This, he said, applies to both absolute and relative risk, in users and in bystanders.

Chandigarh administration extends hookah bar ban till February 11

The UT administration on Monday extended the ban on hookah bars till February 11, 2021, with deputy commissioner Mandip Brar issuing the orders under Section 144 of CrPC to control the spread of novel coronavirus. [...] The DC ordered no hookah would be served for smoke/consumption in hotels, restaurants, taverns, bars and bars. The order would come into force from December 14. Any person violating this order shall be punished under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
