Mature vintages of drinkable Burgundy,

A Word About Vintages and Ratings
Beware the vintage chart for red Burgundy; it is not your friend!
While the concept of a fine vintage might actually mean something in Bordeaux, a well-reputed number on your neck-label will do nothing for the Burgundy in your glass if you open it at the wrong time. And more valuably: the corollary is even more important to understand, that the best vintages to open now, might be the worst ones on the vintage chart.
You may wonder why the list below is short on the go-to years; 2005, 2002, 1999 or 1993, for example. The reason is, those wines are mostly not ready and not really showing that well; certainly not as well as the price premium would demand.
Perhaps we can claim a back-handed advantage from the pandemic? Dining at home might allow us all to appreciate what is in our glass, rather than what our table-mates or fellow restaurant-goers think of the label on our table?
The list of best Burgundy vintages for drinking now is surprisingly light on the so-called great years. Here's a very personal list of what to open or buy for drinking now -
2007, 2006, 2003, 2001, 2000, 1998, 1997, 1996?, 1989, 1986, 1985, 1983... the others are either young, or awkward for whatever reason, or fading and falling apart.
So, don't be too hung up on getting the 'right answer,' buy wines from producers you like at the price you can afford (or be ready to do the exploration necessary to find them.)
Today's list offers numerous possibilities. All wines in stock at our Richmond warehouse now.
