Claro Results

I received the following race report from Ruth , I think it may have been a tad wet at Harden Moor.

Aire's event at Harden Moor and Bingley St Ive's last Sunday was tricky.   So tricky that John Lebeter assures me he was most definitely not there.   Quentin, nursing a poorly calf muscle, moved down to Blue and cruised gently round appearing oblivious to the fact that the rain and cloud made it akin to a night event challenge for mere mortals.   Matthew Rochester, freshly returned from Bath University, was therefore the only Claro tackling Short Brown.  His family put in fine performances on the Orange course, lead in by Toby.

Short Brown Matthew Rochester 14th
Blue Quentin Harding 4th, Ruth Ker 7th, John Lebeter wasn't there
Green David Day 15th
Orange Toby Rochester 5th, Liz Rochester 6th, Rebekah Rochester 7th

Ebor provided a treat on Tuesday evening in an extraordinary area of war debris called Clifton Backies.  For the benefit of those of us who hadn't been before, the start briefing included the helpful information that a. it is very difficult and b. the green is very green.   Tamsin, laughing in the face of adversity, was 1st woman on the Long course in a time of 39.03 minutes.   Her mother put up a fair battle, coming 2nd in 40.01 minutes.   John Lebeter was there; completing in 63.00 minutes.   Injured Quentin sadly wasn't there.  For those of you who haven't run here before it is well worth the visit

On Saturdays return on MTBO despite pulling his back moving the paper from car to car , Tim Evans managed to hang onto Edwyn's Wheel and they came  second with 383 points just behind a local father and Son team who scored 385. David Day was 19th with 190 points. Whilst it didn't rain the track conditions were interesting in places.

Winter Blues   2021

Following the conclusion of our first Lamp O series with paper and MapRun F running in parallel and staggered starts ( but no pub) we are no looking for more wide open spaces for our Winter Series , which to avoid a clash with the Aire series will be on  a Tuesday .

Dates for the series, held on a fortnightly basis, are these:

 Tuesday 12 January

Tuesday 26 January

Tuesday 9 February

Tuesday 23 February

Tuesday 9 March

Tuesday 23 March

Many of you will be experienced in putting Lampos on and Richard  would welcome your input.  He already have a few offers .  Others with little or no experience will be equally welcome to a reasonably easy intro to event planning.  Fresh blood and fresh approaches are always more than welcome.

Lampos are straightforward and quick to put on.  Richard will shortly put clear some updated instructions on the CLARO website, which will cover not only the provision of a basic (pre-COVID) Lampo, but also what changes have been made necessary by the virus.  The planning of the allied MapRun course will be dealt with as well.  There is no lack of support from the rest of us, in particular from Quentin on the technical side.  Many planners manage to do all of their preparation without leaving the comfort of their desks at home.  So if you feel you could plan an event please contact Richard

If you find one of the links doesn't work please advise and I will update for the next newsletter, I am hoping more events  to appear over the next few weeks as more clubs try the new guidelines out. These are the only ones that are on the BOF calendar AND on the clubs website.

Club Membership

Those of you who don't pay by direct debit should have received an e-mail from BOF reminding you that club and BOF membership fees are now due. The committee hope that you want to renew you subscription for next year as we have an exciting programme of events for you and prompt payment reduces the need for the committee to chase in the new year.

April 2021 ( Not the JK)

Covid-19 and Forestry England allowing, CLOK is planning to put on a "definitely not the JK" Acorn Weekend of events in the Whitby area over Easter 2021.  The idea is to use some of the areas, maps and planning that would have been used for the 2020 JK. More details are here

How accurate is your Compass

I picked up this article about the danger of storing your compass close to items of clothing or gadgets that might affect its polarity. Obviously one of the problems doesn't affect all of us but I was surprised what may have a magnet it in and that the impact wasn't a 180 degree error ( that blows my Skipwith excuse)

Items for the newsletter

We have set up an e-mail address news@claro-orienteering.org.uk for you to send items to the newsletter should you want to promote any event, provide results , or  a plug for a report or article you have done for the website. I will do a quick scan for results but would be more than happy to receive them from the competitors.
