Graduate & Professional School Admissions Newsletter

As you leave 2020 behind, I hope you reflect on the importance of diversity. Schools value a diverse student body that genuinely represents the differences that make us interesting and unique. For this reason, most colleges are likely to ask you to write a diversity statement of some kind in your application. Below, I have discussed important things to consider when writing your diversity statement. I have also included examples of how these various prompts are worded.

And, if you are a college senior considering an MBA, be sure to read Stuart Nachbar’s article. My esteemed colleague offers up several amazing options to secure a seat in a competitive MBA program while you are still in college.

Diversity Statements – Four Questions to Help You Brainstorm

Diversity statements are an increasingly common requirement on graduate and professional school applications. They are one of the many strategies that schools are using to be more inclusive in their application processes, ensuring they are promoting diversity in their student body and demonstrating their acceptance of diversity. While this is a noble goal, it can be stressful for applicants to know what to say. For some of you, talking about diversity might be easy. For others, it is often much harder. Here are four questions to ask yourself when brainstorming your diversity statement.

Graduate Business Programs for College Seniors: A Deep Dive

The more selective MBA programs have traditionally sought applicants who have several years of relevant work experience. Their admissions offices rarely considered college seniors. But now there are seven selective MBA programs targeted to college seniors that offer admission that is delayed until the applicant has acquired the required work experience. Apply to these programs, with an impressive resume and academic record as well as top percentile GMAT scores, and if you get accepted, you will have a seat waiting for you one to four years later, depending on the program you choose.

Examples of Diversity Prompts:

"How does equity, diversity, and social justice shape an issue in counseling psychology that is of interest to you?" (Marriage Family Therapy)
"How have your life experiences and edu- cational background informed your under- standing of the barriers facing groups that are underrepresented in higher education?" (Physician Assistant)
"How do you see yourself contributing to diversity in your profession after you earn your medical degree?" (Medical College)
"Where are you on your journey of engaging with or fighting for social justice?" (PhD in Sociology)
"Please write an essay on how you would enhance diversity at our school.” (MS Computer Science)

"I chose to work with Doing College and Beyond specifically because Elizabeth takes very few clients each cycle to ensure she has ample time to devote to each individual applicant. But the main reason I decided to work with Elizabeth is because of her candor in speaking to the positive and negative aspects of my application. Elizabeth’s comments helped me to shape a meaningful personal statement and concise, poignant answers to secondary prompts which made my application stand out in the large, highly competitive applicant pool.

Finally, Elizabeth provided emotional support and perspective through the ups and downs of the application process, providing timely answers to questions which just can’t be found roaming through internet blogs. For those applicants looking for an honest opinion on their medical school application and the help needed to turn a good application into one that truly projects your best self, I highly recommend looking no further than Elizabeth LaScala and Doing College and Beyond.”
